YesAsia Editorial Description

Shy Kenji is a Japanese librarian in Bangkok who lives within a neatly organized world and fantasizes about committing suicide, but gets interrupted every time he attempts to end his life. While at work, he becomes obsessed with a beautiful girl he spots through the bookshelves. Later, while attempting to jump off a bridge, he watches her die when she is hit by a car. Kenji attempts to comfort the girl's sister, Noi, but eventually returns home, where he is visited by his loutish brother and a Yakuza-linked associate. A scuffle between these visitors results in their deaths. Scared and confused, Kenji retreats to Noi's messy home, which he systematically cleans while they get to know each other and help each other through painful issues in their lives. Tragic and blackly comic with elements of gangster cinema and toilet humor, LAST LIFE IN THE UNIVERSE is a touching work that refuses easy categorization. Pen-ek Ratanaruang's film boldly takes its time to unfold, allowing viewers to savor Christopher Doyles's (IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE) lush visuals. With Kenji, Asano Tadanobu has created a protagonist who says more with his silences than most characters do with dialogue. Japanese film fans will also enjoy director Takashi Miike's raucous cameo as a Yakuza boss.

"Director Pen-Ek Ratanaruang here proves to be one of Asia's hottest new talents." - Leslie, Felperin (Film Critic), Uncut, 08/01/2004

"[A] stylish, slightly surreal mood piece....Disarmingly seductive..." - Kevin, Thomas (Film critic), Los Angeles Times, 08/20/2004

More than artful moping Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
After the first few scenes of this movie, I thought it was going to be one of those artfully mopey movies about directionless young people feeling sorry for themselves. I'm glad that I stayed with it because it becomes much more. In simplest terms, it is about the intersection of two lonely, wounded lives. However, this description doesn't begin to capture the film's ineffable charm. Beautifully lensed by Christopher Doyle, "Last Life" is glacially paced and uneven in its story-telling, but eventually -- against all odds -- it makes the viewer care about its oddball, disconnected characters. Highly recommended for a mature audience.

Work Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
One of the art films that work on its way. Great cinematography by Doyle. Probably, you would have to watch more than once to understand (or pretending to be understood). It is slow but if you like this kind of film you will overcome it.

A sublime work of art. Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Every once in a while you stumble upon one of those movies which renews your faith in the power of film. This is one of those movies. Marvelous direction. Stunning photography. Great acting. A powerful script. A cameo by Japanese director Takashi Miike. What more could you ask for?

BRILLIANT Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
"Last Life in the Universe" is such an incredible movie. My friend from Universal recommended it to me and I absolutely loved it. It's such an incredible character study, letting you to just watch two desperately lonely people start to come together...the imagery and backgrounds are all so eerily beautiful and the acting's so nuanced and subtle...I especially liked the actress who played Nid. Anyway, I really liked this movie. It's sort of like a different spin on "Lost in Translation", with the characters brought together by loss instead of culture. Like I said...it's an incredible movie. :)
