YesAsia Editorial Description
Am I the Last Life In The Universe? The answer seems no to Kenji (Asano Tadanobu). He at least has Noi (Sinitta Boonyasak) with him - just for a while. Death connects as well as disconnects the characters - it is a motif that keeps haunting the movie from start to finish. Kenji, a Japanese Liberian living in Bangkok, is addicted to suicidal attempts. A series of killing brings him to a mysterious Thai prostitute named Noi. She is almost his antithesis in terms of character and personality, but the only intersection of their lives - the deep sorrow and solitude they are in - is enough to tie their fates together to spin an extraordinary tale... Even without a common language to communicate, they are destined to share some incredible but melancholic experiences in their lives.
Thai filmmaker Pen-ek Ratanaruang is emerging as a world class director recently. This time he has Christopher Doyle (2046, In the Mood for Love) as his cinematographer and Japanese superstar Asano Tadanobu (Ichi the Killer, Zatoichi) to feature in his Last Life In The Universe. This film has been sweeping awards ceremonies and selected for numerous film festivals. Apart from the twelve awards obtained locally in Thailand, the film was also an official Oscar Submission (Foreign Language Film) in 2004 and Asano Tadanobu was awarded Best Actor in the Upstream Category in the 2003 Venice Film Festival.

More than artful moping
|
After the first few scenes of this movie, I thought it was going to be one of those artfully mopey movies about directionless young people feeling sorry for themselves. I'm glad that I stayed with it because it becomes much more. In simplest terms, it is about the intersection of two lonely, wounded lives. However, this description doesn't begin to capture the film's ineffable charm. Beautifully lensed by Christopher Doyle, "Last Life" is glacially paced and uneven in its story-telling, but eventually -- against all odds -- it makes the viewer care about its oddball, disconnected characters. Highly recommended for a mature audience. |

Work

One of the art films that work on its way. Great cinematography by Doyle. Probably, you would have to watch more than once to understand (or pretending to be understood). It is slow but if you like this kind of film you will overcome it. |

A sublime work of art.

Every once in a while you stumble upon one of those movies which renews your faith in the power of film. This is one of those movies. Marvelous direction. Stunning photography. Great acting. A powerful script. A cameo by Japanese director Takashi Miike. What more could you ask for? |

BRILLIANT
|
"Last Life in the Universe" is such an incredible movie. My friend from Universal recommended it to me and I absolutely loved it. It's such an incredible character study, letting you to just watch two desperately lonely people start to come together...the imagery and backgrounds are all so eerily beautiful and the acting's so nuanced and subtle...I especially liked the actress who played Nid. Anyway, I really liked this movie. It's sort of like a different spin on "Lost in Translation", with the characters brought together by loss instead of culture. Like I said...it's an incredible movie. :) |
