Before he became the world-renowned godfather of action films, John Woo directed a number of comedies at Cinema City, the first of which was Laughing Times (1980), the inaugural production for the company that went on to rule Hong Kong Cinema in the '80s. Paying homage to Charlie Chaplin, in particular his 1921 silent film The Kid, Woo's poignant period comedy stars Dean Shek as a tramp with a heart of gold in post-war Hong Kong. Stricken with poverty and hunger, the tramp bumps into an orphaned kid (Wong Wai), a poor singer (Wong Sau Man), and a downtrodden drunkard (veteran actor Wu Ma), who have all been taken advantage by a vicious slave trader (Karl Maka, also the producer of the film). It is up to the heroic tramp to save them and defeat the bad guy...

戰後社會，經濟衰退，百業蕭條。流浪漢當天，在飢餓貧困當中，遇上被壞人麥嘉利用去幹犯法事情的孤兒汪偉，二人頓成莫逆。其後石天又遇上一個可憐的歌女王秀文，產生一場滑稽的浪漫史，後來又碰上醉漢午馬，午馬因受辱於麥嘉而變得意志消愁。壞人麥嘉販賣人口將歌女與小女孩一同撈走。石天與午馬終於奮起雄心，冒著生命危險，把小孩與歌女救出，壞人麥嘉則難逃法網。
Dean Saki, a wanderer, lived his life in poverty and hunger, ran into the chase of the police and Wong Wai, a poor orphan who was used by the villain Carl Mak in committing crimes. They turned out to be good friends. Meanwhile, Dean fell in love with a singer. Later on, he met Woo Ma, who drank his days away because of Carl Mak abuses. Evil Carl Mak was dealing in slave trading and had captured the singer and the orphan. Dean and Woo Ma ventured their lives to rescue them. Carl Mak was finally arrested by the police.
