YesAsia Editorial Description

Sensitive, romantic, and affecting, Laundry marks the assured directorial debut of Mori Junichi, who won the Sundance/NHK International Filmmakers Award for the film. The film stars popular actor Kobuzuka Yosuke (Ping Pong) as a simple-minded, but kindhearted man; Koyuki (The Last Samurai) co-stars as a troubled young woman. When these two lonely souls meet up, they find courage to face life's gentle tragedies together.

Handicapped teenager Teru (Kubozuka Yosuke) has taken care of his grandmother's laundromat ever since childhood. While he delivers cleaned laundry he becomes acquainted with Mizue (Koyuki) who suffers from a failed relationship. She has the bad habit of making up for her lost love by peeking at other people in the shop. After some unfortunate circumstances, the laundromat is closed down. With the passing of his grandmother, Teru is left alone. Teru sadly bids his grandmother a final farewell in the company of Mizue, both having tasted life's tragic turns time and time again. …

Professional Review of "Laundry"

March 8, 2007

Laundry is different from most of the movies I have seen lately. It does not have a very subtle and well calculated plot, nor does it attempt to exploit the usual sex theme in romance genre. It instead captures the heart of the audience with its simple and unpolished narrative. Watching this film is no doubt a refreshing journey.

Teru (Yosuke Kubozua) is an optimistic young man. Being slightly mentally handicapped doesn't prohibit him from working at the laundry store. One day, he comes across a girl called Mizue (Koyuki) who has a miserable past. The blossom of love has come spontaneously... Obviously, both the male and female protagonists are disabled in a certain way, Teru lacks common sense while Mizue has a bad habit of shoplifting as a result of a breakup. This story setup reminds me of Oasis, a Korean movie that focuses on a pair of lovers that belong to the minority groups of the society. The male is a parasite of his family, while the girl is physically handicapped. In that movie, realism is stressed, we keep seeing the two lovers being discriminated by the people living around them. Their life is a pure tragedy. Compared to that film, the treatment of the characters in Laundry is totally contrary. Although Teru and Mizue are handicapped, they are certainly not discriminated or forgotten by anyone. Teru's friends never actually teases him for his stupidity, Mizue's sister has also finally received her. They are not the dependent of their family too. They have a job and work diligently to get paid for their living. The filmmaker's positive and optimistic attitude toward his characters is really very encouraging.

Apart from the positive plot, the relaxed and spontaneous atmosphere as well as the outstanding character design are also the major factors that make this film compelling. The setting is quite refreshing. We are retreated from the overcrowded and stressful city to a small town with simple houses and pure residents. Everything is so nice and natural. It allows us to embrace the beauty of nature. What is good about the characters is their exaggerated purity. No matter Teru, Mizue or the pigeon man Sally (Takeshi Naito), each of them has an innocent mind. They treat each other faithfully and sincerely. It is very different from the social interaction in our society where everyone is egocentric. I agree that these characters are not realistic at all. They are just too good to be true. But this is movie! The premise of the story has already told us that this film is not a genuine reflection of reality, it is more like a fairy tale that brings hope and joy to the audience.

Yosuke Kubozuka is a prolific actor. Up to date, he has been in about seven films in his short span of career. Each one of his characters is so different yet convincing. His portrayal of Teru is quite low profile and spontaneous. Without being overdose or too blatant, his performance fits the requirement of this character perfectly. Female lead Koyuki is not a very gorgeous woman. It was amazing to see how Junichi Mori was able to turn her into an unbelievably cute and beautiful lady in front of the camera. You can actually sense her pain through her eyes.

Laundry is a very good title for this film. Laundry, which means clothes washing, has an indication of cleansing or purification. This film is a story about purification. Not only does it cleanse the heart of Teru and Mizue, it also manages to purify our heart and provide us a pressure-free respite of two hours.

Make more movies like this! Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
After watching this touching film, I was astonished to learn that this was the directorial debut of Mori Junichi. Everything about this film works so well that it feels like it must have had the steady hand of a veteran director behind it. But perhaps a veteran director would not have had the audacity to create such a splendidly heartwarming film out of such unassuming elements.

Kubozuka Yosuke is thoroughly convincing as a sweet-natured, mentally challenged young man. Koyuki may be even better as the emotionally damaged young woman who comes to embrace him. One truly believes her when she says that the young man is all that is keeping her alive.

The viewer becomes fully immersed in the peculiar world of this film and comes to share the minor triumphs and major sorrows of these wounded characters. The story's unforgettable culmination feels just right. "Laundry" is a terrific film and I highly recommend it for a general audience.

A Wonderful Movie and A Great Actor! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This movie confirms the excellence in Japanese cinema.
I always find the miraculous depth and carefully
managed scenes so impressive in many wonderful
Japanese films. This movie is a perfect example.
It's one of the most remarkable and unforgettable
movies I have ever seen. The wonderful actor, Yosuke
Kobuzuka is so perfect and faultless in the movie that I can't wait to see all the movies he is in. A major
talent. (he is also excellent in "Ping Pong").
If you are serious about movies, don't miss this one.

A Wonderful Movie! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This is one of the best Japanese movies. Poignant,
sad, sweet and heartwarming. The main character even
though is mildly retarded, he is so much more wise and
mature than us normal people. His heart is always in
the right place. Without the impaccable performance
of the great young Yosuke Kubuzuka, it may not have
pulled off. He is absolutely wonderful. He is also
very, very good in "Ping Pong". I only wish more
excellent Japanese movies have English subtitles
right after they came on market so more people get
to share the wonderful film making of Japan.

Refreshing Film Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
What a NICE movie! I long for relief from the endless, senseless, mind-numbing violence of most "important" films. "Laundry" is a breath of fresh air in a sometimes stale business. I believe a simple story well told needs little embellishment and this movie proves that point.

The plot needs a suspension of belief to work and it allows us to do just that. No contrived devices, special effects or shortcuts, just honest storytelling. The actors are likeable and the story invites you to follow and you want to. Touching at times, funny other times and sad (in a good way) at times this story resolves nicely.

I recommend "Laundry" without reservation to anyone wanting a good video experience. It is even better the second time one sees it. Bravo!

I purchased the VCD Overseas Version of Laundry because of the reviews on the YesAsia site. The photography, sound and subtitles on the VCD version were fine. This was a first class production from start to finish.
