フィルム・ノワールの名匠ジャン＝ピエール・メルヴィルの、後のヌーヴェル・ヴァーグにも影響を与えた伝説的処女作。／１９４１年、ドイツ占領下のフランスの地方都市。１人の老人とその姪が暮らす家に、ドイツ軍将校ヴェルナーが同居することになった。ヴェルナーは音楽家で、毎晩のように、フランス文化への畏敬の念を二人に語るのだが、彼らは頑なに沈黙をもって応じるばかり。ある日、ヴェルナーは休暇を利用して念願のパリを訪れる。そこで彼が知った事実とは……。原作は大戦中、ドイツ占領下で地下出版されたヴェルコールの同名小説で、その内容に感銘を受けたメルヴィル監督が戦後すぐに映画化に着手、３人の役者を中心としたシンプルな作りの映画ながら、後にヌーヴェル・ヴァーグを支えるカメラマン、アンリ・ドカ（ドカエ）の撮影もあって、堂々とした一作に仕上がった。 ２０１０年日本公開時予告編
