YesAsia Editorial Description
Man and Kit (both played by Ekin Cheng) are identical twins who were separated at the age of 8 when their parents divorced. Man, the younger twin, stayed with his mother in Hong Kong while Kit moved to Thailand with his father. From then on they lived their own lives, never once telling others of the existence of the other twin.
When they are in their twenties, Kit returns to Hong Kong to visit Man, and they immediately become close brothers, telling each other of their lives. Suddenly, Kit wants to borrow Man's car, but because he has no Hong Kong license Man lends his own license to his brother. They thought it would be fun to swap identities, but what they didn't expect was that they couldn't switch back!
Ekin tackles the challenge of playing a pair of twins with completely different personalities: a tough, straight older brother and a gentle, gay younger brother. This comedy of mistaken identities is convincingly held together by Ekin's performance and scene-stealing cameos from Jan Lam, who plays Ekin's ex-boyfriend, and Dayo Wong Chi Wah as the boss of the triads! Leave Me Alone is chosen to participate in the Tokyo Film Festival in 2004 as part of the Winds of Asia competition.

Professional Review of "Leave Me Alone (Hong Kong Version) "

Normally, the prospect of a movie starring Ekin Cheng and Charlene Choi isn't that exciting to me. So, I went into a viewing of Leave Me Alone with fairly low expectations. Happily, my expectations were met and, in fact, exceeded. While it's nothing too mind-blowing, Leave Me Alone is a surprisingly good movie that delivers some solid comedy and action. In the film, Ekin portrays twin brothers. One is a gay fashion designer who lives in Hong Kong, and the other is a straight con artist who has moved to Thailand. During a visit to Hong Kong, the straight Ekin switches IDs with the gay one and borrows his car, which results in a big mess after an accident. Straight Ekin must try to fend off the advances of gay Ekin's lover and sort out the mess left in Thailand after gay Ekin (along with his girlfriend, played by Charlene Choi) fail to pay a tough loan shark back. The first part of Leave Me Alone plays out as you might expect, it's a fairly lighthearted comedy. Actually, Ekin is very good in this part. While he's not going to win any Oscars anytime soon, at least he's not just trying to get by on his hair anymore. As the film goes on though, the story becomes more serious. There are a few comedic bits, such as gay Ekin teaching Charlene's dad (Kenny Bee) how to dress, but for the most part, the second half reminded me a lot of the Hong Kong action movies produced during the golden years. In particular, there's an exciting freeway chase that ranks up there with some of the best action work over the last few years. There are also a couple of nice shootouts that stand apart from a lot of the Matrix wannabes popping up nowadays. Danny Pang is coming out as one of the strongest young directors working in Hong Kong right now, and Leave Me Alone puts another bright spot on his resume. The film could have used some tightening up, and the ending is a bit too upbeat. Also, as with his other movies, Pang tends to have a bit of a problem using overly splashy cinematography at inappropriate times. But overall, Leave Me Alone is a very solid movie that most Hong Kong film fans should enjoy. By Neil Koch - www.hkfilm.net |

The movie itself is very simple and is not complicated. There not the usual Ekin Cheng movie, not dramtic, not much action BUT... it's nice to see him play twins with two different personalities. I agree he played being a gay designer in the movie. Very reserved. Indeed a good actor. Love to watch it again because it is very light. |

What is wrong with HK?
|
This is the reason I decided to stop buying HK movies. The actress, actor, and the plot can not compare to the older HK movies. It seems like anyone can be an actor in HK and they do not need any acting classes. How can people think that TWINS can sing or act? Both the singers from the Twins acted horrible in every movies and they do not know how to sing either. Charlene acted horrible in this movie and it seems like she read from a paper or something. She has no emotion and it just frustrated me watching her. HK totally ruin how we see HK by having really horrible new singers and actors. |

Charlene Choi a versatile actress?? C'mon C'mon now...please no forced puking to other great actors out there. First, she counts on her good looks and charm that she already claimed from her singing. Secondly, she probably had a cardboard with all the lines. She FORGOT the lyrics at some award ceremony! And that was a easy song too! That's why I RARELY watched H.K movies because they come up with all these singer movies. IT gets kinda fake in a while! "Oh, sorry your album couldn't sell, let's sell ur looks through a movie." OR "Your album is doing great maybe your movies will work on them too!" NAH, too much wishful thinking. Sometimes when singers try to act, and stars try to sing. It's like, "Sand in your shoes." Anywayz, I'm off topic now. This movie has a bad script and senseless storytelling( not thorough). |

This is a bog-standard action film - nothing more, nothing less. Nothing special at all. Yes, the cast do OK, but are working with a such a hackneyed script and plot that they are not allowed to shine at all. The CG effects were also of a fairly amateur standard. I must admit I was disappointed in this film - expecting a lot from the (usually great) director. Not up to his usual high quality. |
