Lee Saeng Gang (Jukhyang) - Meditation Music

Designated as the nation's cultural pride, Korea's top traditional dance musician Lee Saeng Gang presents a fascinating album entitled Meditation Music filled with divine sounds of heavens. Encouraged by his parents who were deeply versed in Korean traditional instruments, Lee learned to play piri (cylindrical bamboo oboe) and danso (short vertical bamboo flute) at the early age of five. At eleven, propelled by his admiration for Korea's famous daegeum (large horizontal bamboo flute) player Han Joo Hwan, Lee mastered the theories of sanjo, a popular genre in Korean traditional court music which bears some resemblance to an ancient version of jazz. In his latest release Meditation Music, Lee performs a variety of wind instruments like daegeum, danso, sogeum (small horizontal bamboo flute), piri, and taepyeongso (conical bamboo oboe). Other performing contributors include Im Kyung Joo (gayageum, a long zither); Lee Ho Yong (jing, a gong; moktak, a wooden clacker); Lee Kwan Woong (ajaeng, a bowed zither); and Huh Bong Soo (janggu, a double-headed drum).
