Lee Sam-neung is in love with a servant Lau Chi-yuen. Their interactions are opposed by the whole family, including Old Master Lee and the eldest brother Lee Hung-yat. As they find out that Yuen seems to be protected by an evil spirit, Lee is glad and he ultimately consents to their marriage, thinking that they may obtain blessing from the gods. Later Lee gets sick, before his death, Yat forces him to sign a will. It specifies the expulsion of Yuen from the family and obliges him to sign a letter divorcing Sam-neung. He can do nothing but agree to the terms. Sam-leung refuses to comply. Yuen and Sam-neung are expelled by Yat and his wife to a deserted melon farm following the death of Lee. Being informed that the land is actually haunted by the Demon of Gourd, Sam-neung is extremely worried. Yuen is awarded a military scroll and a precious sword for his merits in eliminating the Melon Spirit. Soon, Yuen joins the army and the couple has to separate unwillingly.
Afterwards Sam-leung is compelled to live in a shabby hut where firewood is kept, she is again subject to the harsh treatment by the couple. Later, she gives birth to a son Au-chi, named after his miraculous act of biting off the umbilical cord at birth. Chi is entrusted to the care of Sam-neung's second brother Hung-shun, the child is put under the care of his father. Some years later, Yuen is awarded kingship. He is concerned only his wife and son so he refuses the love of the princess of a prefecture. The couple reunites after years of separation, joined by Chi who is led to his mother by a white hare.
