Lee Seung Gi Vol.1

YesAsia Editorial Description

Korea's do-all boy-next-door superstar Lee Seung Gi got his start in 2004 with this debut album, which is finally getting a reissue release after being out of print for years. Only 17 at the time, Lee Seung Gi stole the hearts of many with his husky voice and hit ballad "Because You're My Woman". Written and composed by PSY, the song about being in love with an older woman turned the talented teen into a favorite among "noona", and even set off a "noona syndrome" in Korea. The album also includes songs like the titular rock ballad "Dream of a Moth", a cover of Panic's "Anybody", and "Encore" featuring N.E.X.T.

Lee Seung Gi's Husky Debut
A few years ago, I backpacked from Seoul to Jeju and back. I stopped at every record store I saw along the way, and none of them had Lee Seung Gi's first album. That was how hard it was to find this album. It took a while, but the publishers finally got the hint and reissued his first album. All of Lee Seung Gi's releases are worth listening to, but his first one is really something special.

Lee Seung Gi was just a 17-year-old high schooler when he debuted in 2004, but you wouldn't be able to tell based on his voice. In fact, newer fans probably wouldn't be able to recognize 17-year-old Lee Seung Gi's voice at all, because he had a very different music and vocal style for his first album. Now known more for love songs, K-pop's golden boy started out six years ago with a husky beyond his years voice and a predominantly rock ballad album.

The song that everyone still remembers is, of course, "Because You're My Woman" (Track 4), which became the anthem for younger guys in love with older women - and a compelling reason for many a noona to fall for the teen singer. Lee Seung Gi's voice comes out strong and husky against simple piano chords, and grows with the music into an explosion of guitar and percussion. Written and composed by Psy, the phenomenal rock ballad rises and falls from section to section, and Lee pretty much sings out his teenage heart, adding a raspy edge on the ending notes. I especially like the way the song concludes not by fading out, but with an almost abrupt stop after a final declaration of "You're my woman". Even present-day Lee Seung Gi pales in comparison to 17-year-old Lee Seung Gi when it comes to delivering this song, because of the gruff, emotional rawness he brought to the song at the time.

For more of husky Seung Gi, "Dream of a Moth" (Track 2) is as, if not more heartrending than "Because You're My Woman". Psy's lyrics about a lonely moth's dream to be a butterfly are simple yet haunting, as are producer Yoo Kyeon Hyung's back-to-the-basics rock ballad composition and arrangement. Lee Seung Gi effectively roughens his voice to convey the anguished outcry of the gravelly rock number. While youth was his strength in "Because You're My Woman", a few more years of life experience would have probably made "Dream of a Moth" an even stronger offering.

I've already mentioned Psy's name twice, and he shows up many more times as he wrote over half the songs in the album, including the piano and strings ballad "Delete" (Track 6) and the youthful guitar rock number "Music Time" (Track 9). The trouble-courting rapper and boy-next-door Lee Seung Gi might seem like a strange combination, but it's one that worked out amazingly well for both of them. Other than his own records, Lee Seung Gi's debut album is probably Psy's strongest musical work. One of the songs Psy wrote for the album, "Father" (Track 5), is much more his song than Lee Seung Gi's. It's Psy's voice that's heard the most in the track, rapping out a father's lifetime of hardships through mellow rhymes and heart-piercing lyrics, while Lee belts the uplifting rock chorus. Psy actually later remade "Father" for his own album.

Lee Seung Gi includes two great cover songs on the album. His free-spirited version of Panic's "Anybody" (Track 3) is young, fresh, and fun, and really makes one wonder what kind of music he'd be making now if he had stuck with rock. The rap interlude by Bounce's Kang Jin Woo, though, sounds even more out of place in this version than in the original. The other cover song of the album is especially meaningful, a remake of his mentor Lee Sun Hee's classic eighties hit "Dear J" (Track 7) to commemorate her 20th anniversary. Yoo Kyeon Hyung's new arrangement transforms the soft, lilting ballad into an energetic rock number that Lee Seung Gi makes his own. The album closes with the grand Shin Hae Chul-composed rock ballad "Encore" (Track 12), which like any good encore, does indeed leave the listener wanting more.

Lee Seung Gi would give many more worthwhile albums (not to mention dramas and variety shows) in the following years, but none are like his first. By the time he released his second album in 2006, he had dropped the deliberate huskiness for clearer vocals, and moved more towards his current style of pop ballads, which better match his age and happy, clean-cut image. It was the sensible and successful direction to take, and he's certainly done good for himself and for music fans with his strong subsequent releases. Lee Seung Gi's husky voice is a thing of the past, but at least his first album is around again for replay, and it's still as captivating now as it was six years ago.

The Next Kim Min Jong? Customer Review Rated Bad 7 - 7 out of 10
After hearing this predominantly rock-ballad album, I wondered if LSK would be the next KMJ. Perhaps--he's got the same style and definitely has the superstart qualities. Seems like a nice fellow too.

Definitely interesting and deserves high-marks.

Lee Seung Gi is a blooming newcomer with a lot of talent. He can sing. His songs are great and they sound like music, not just anything, but true music. He has a lot more talent then many of the famous artists in korea these days. I would recommend this cd because it is filled with amazing songs. He is cute too.

Wow Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Wow... I saw the mv on the I Channel too. After hearing that opening, I just knew I had to get the cd, and it's great! I just can't believe that he's 4 years younger than me... That makes me feel old, but as long as I have some good music to keep me company I'll be fine. ^_^
