Donnie's directorial debut
Donnie Yen has forged a formidable directing partnership with Wilson Yip in recent years. With Yip taking charge of the drama and Yen focusing on action, the pair has made some of the most enjoyable action films of this decade with SPL (2005), Dragon Tiger Gate (2006), and Flash Point (2007). Their latest love child, Ip Man, is a highly anticipated biopic of Bruce Lee's martial arts mentor, even though Yen is credited only as an actor this time.

So what about the very first film that Donnie ever directed? In 1997, he made his directorial debut Legend of the Wolf on a decidedly low budget, and although a flop in terms of box-office gross, it was overall a moderate success considering that he had to spread himself thin playing multiple roles as actor, director, producer, screenwriter, and action choreographer.

On screen Donnie plays Wolf, a man who arrives at a poor village in post-war China looking to meet a girl whom he doesn't remember (the cause of his amnesia isn't explained, but probably has to do with the gunshot in the opening sequence). Wei, a nice villager, befriends this stranger. When they are ambushed by a big bad bunch of bandits, Wolf reveals himself to be the baddest brawler with a bent for bloodbath. Later on, Wolf is reunited with his faithful fiancee (the beautiful Carmen Lee), and before they can live happily ever after, Wolf's secret past catches up with him as a legion of deadly baddies, the leader of which is played by Ben Lam, comes visit the village with murderous intent.

The script employs the narrative device of an enveloping storyline set in modern-day Hong Kong, where Wolf and Wei have become reclusive old men musing the philosophy of being invincible. A cocky young man (played by singer Edmond Leung) desperately seeks out the legendary killer for a job, but Wolf and Wei only want to tell him their story, and the period portion of the picture is played out in their flashbacks.

The fight scenes in Legend of the Wolf are exhilarating enough for one to forgive and forget the underdeveloped story and other faults. Agile, powerful, and well versed in different styles of kung fu, Donnie shows why he is considered one of the best martial arts superstars in the world. He is virtually a one-man army, crunching bones and splattering blood with his fists, kicks, or any other thing he can beat people up with, racking up a body count that could put Rambo to shame.

Donnie Yen kicking serious butt is nothing unusual; the real surprise here is Dayo Wong as the wisecracking Wei. The stand-up comedy king exceeded expectation as not just a comic relief, but holding his own in the many fights he finds himself in, complementing Donnie pretty well. Since he's so good, where could Donnie find a better co-star? This editor would suggest he call up Tony Jaa. It is about time some producer put them together in a cinematic deathmatch a la The Forbidden Kingdom, and if that day comes, all martial arts fans around the world would collectively give a joyous shriek like Yen often does in the movie.

I enjoyed it. Customer Review Rated Bad 7 - 7 out of 10
This has split opinions and i personally think that it is a decent effort from Donnie Yen even though it is a bit on the low budget side.

Story wise it is only minorly interesting with some boring scenes attached. This is better than his other efforts e.g. Ballistic kiss and shanghai affairs

The real part in which the film shines is the fight scenes they are intense and at great speed (intentional under cranking), with a huge array of combination kicks from Donnie. And this is what sets it apart from other films is Donnies kicking ability in which no other martial arts actor can recreate. The fights are also more real unlike otheres in which they seem more chereographed.

The DVD quality is poor with crap sound and picture. No extras at all.

Okay for a directorial debut Customer Review Rated Bad 3 - 3 out of 10
The story/plot was confusing at times & the editing could use some work. If you like action that is fast camera work, quick changes/circling angles then this is for you. If you get motion sick easily, you may want to steer clear of this one. Definately a "must have" if you are adding to your Donnie Yen collection. A very nice showcase of fast & hard, nothing flowery boxing as only Donnie can present.

Weak Customer Review Rated Bad 3 - 3 out of 10
I've got to say I'm amazed by the other reviews. I don't understand how anyone could think this was anything near good, let alone excellent. Yes, it was made extremely cheaply. And it shows. The biggest disappointment tho and the thing that lets this film down completely is that all the fight scenes are awful! The director has tried to make them very fast and dynamic, but what you get is lots of weapons clashing at such speed that you can't actually see anything. It's full of nauseating shots that flash for a split second and are gone. There is not a single decent fight scene in the entire movie. Very poor.

Most Impressive Directorial Debut Ever!!! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I must say I am a hardcore Donnie Yen fan, but either way this movie was incredible. Even though there was tons of undercranking and editing, Donnie Yen shines like no other. This was his style and even though there are people who dislike it, people who realize Donnie's style of action direction could appreciate it even more. And just in case you didn't know, Donnie Yen had only US $500,000 to create such a fantastic movie. That's only half a million! I don't think I have ever seen a movie with such a low budget that was so innovative and satisfying all at once. If you disliked this movie, just check out Iron Monkey, the Fist of Fury series, Kung-fu Master series, or Once Upon a Time in China 2 and you can easily see why Donnie Yen has been my favorite martial artist for quite some time now. DONNIE YEN IS A PIMP!
