Enjoyable and atmospheric actioner

"Legendary Assassin" will never be mistaken for timeless art, but packs a lot of entertainment into its short 88 minute running length. Wu Jing plays Bo, who at the film's outset, arrives in Tai O village on one of Hong Kong's outlying islands. There he hunts down a crime boss, pounds him into a bloody pulp, then chops off his head. Carrying the head in a bag, with the boss's gang hot on his heels, Bo next encounters a beautiful young woman (Celina Jade), whom he rescues as she tumbles from a tree in her efforts to fetch her cat. As it turns out, the woman is a cop. And the cop and the killer quickly bond. Unable to leave the island due to an approaching typhoon, Bo the killer ends up killing time at the police station, where his quickly growing friendship with the lady cop draws the ire of a jealous fellow police officer. The jealously is played for comic relief; the film nicely blends its comedy and romantic elements with the action which lies at the film's core. Action moves back to the forefront when the gang storms the police station in order to get Bo (and their dead boss's head). While the script does not exactly sing, it efficiently tells this compact tale. The action is of the wildly over the top, almost cartoonish variety. The cinematography is excellent, bringing to life the atmospheric village of Tai O as an important player in the action. Wu Jing is perfectly suited to play an action hero with a hint of menace; he definitely delivers the goods in his fight scenes. Celina Jade does a nice job of depicting her character's growing attraction to Bo and shows off some impressive martial arts moves. The movie also is blessed with an excellent supporting cast. Bottom line: "Legendary Assassin" is very enjoyable and doesn't wear out its welcome by running too long or taking itself too seriously. I recommend it. |

Good but more is expected.

Wu jing having collaborate on countless occasions on various pictures with action director Li chung chi, share directing duties together. Being the directional debute of both talents one would expect something quite unique and different to distinguish themselfs from everyone else, instead we get a picture that has been done by so many pictures it gives the picture less credit. Fun can be had with the film with quite a few decently choreographed fight scenes interspersed between the drama and comedy. The problems with the fights are the over use of wire work that shouldnt appear in a reality based film and can prove rather distracting. Wu jing also throws to many kicks especially during the end fight where is constantly using his legs. Celina Jade does an ok job as a police woman but the role seems to be suited to a different actress. The directing seems to be really routine and one cannot help and wonder if it is too early to hand wu jing the directors chair. slightly entertaining is not routine. |

Perfect!!!

If its Wu Jing, it's really good. Wow, the stunts and the love story too. You will loved every minute of this movie. I like the portion when he was recuing the girl and we was fighting everyone. ... my goodness, it's as if i am watching Never say die. As usual, the ending is sad but it still a movie worth buying as i assure you, in time, you'll watch it again. |

Good action movie

I think there was a good attempt from the director to dramatise the story with little moments of someone's cry here and there. As a result the story became somewhat cheesy. And here I am not talking about the tough assassin Bruce (Wu Jing) but rather about a young police lady Holly (Celina Jade) as the major softener of this ruthless jaw-dropping fight story. Somehow I was constantly having a feeling that I've seen those "Legendary" twists already. Perhaps you would also notice some similarities with The Banquet movie of Feng Xiao Gang and The Hero of Zhang Yimou. Now about Madam Ma (Aoyama Noriko) - the main evil heroin. Actually I anticipated a fight sequences between her and Wu Jing. Instead she was just holding her sword "a la dangerous samurai" and was eventually beaten up without hardly using it. What a disappointment. The overall enjoyment level from the action in the Legendary Assassin is slightly less than what I had from seeing The Flash Point with Donnie Yen. Recommended. |
