One of the earliest productions from Hong Kong film company Cinema City, the 1981 film Life After Life earned the 80s filmmaking powerhouse some early reputation with two Golden Horse awards (for art direction and sound mixing) and a Hong Kong Film Awards statue (for film score). Written and directed by Peter Yung (The System) based on a story by famed novelist Lillian Lee Pik Wah (Farewell to My Concubine), the supernatural thriller tells a terrifying tale of reincarnation and fatalism, in which singer-actor George Lam plays Raymond, who is in charge of organizing a fashion show with the theme of Chinese puppets. He hires Didi (Flora Cheung) to be the chief model, and they soon get entangled in a love triangle with the show's sponsor, Mr. Si (Patrick Tse). After acquiring a set of old puppets, Raymond begins to have violent visions of the murder of a puppeteer and his wife that took place 26 years ago...

A renowned multi-Media specialist, Lam, is contracted to produce a major fashion show. The sponsor of the show, Mr. Shi, is at first reluctant to accept the idea but finally agrees. In casting for a major role int he show, Lam meets Didi, a newcomer in the modelling field and selects her. Both Mr. Shi and Lam and interested in Didi and she carries on with both of them. Through resourceful reseach of Cheng, Lam locates a set of very old puppets and negotiates to borrow them. The owner, an old lady now living with her slightly retarded grandson Ah Hon as the caretaker of a temple, agrees to loan the puppets. A series of accidents immediately begin to take place...
