Set in Jeju, the 2010 SBS family drama Life is Beautiful revolves around a loving, multi-generation family led by veteran actors Kim Young Chul and Kim Hae Suk. Song Chang Ui (Heartstrings), Woo Hee Jin (Three Men), Lee Sang Yoon (The Duo), and Nam Gyu Ri (49 Days) play their four children, while Kim Sang Joong (City Hunter) and Yoon Sa Hoon (Three Men) are the uncles of the Yang family. Written by renowned screenwriter Kim Soo Hyun, the heartwarming weekend drama follows the family's everyday lives and conflicts over 63 episodes, including oldest daughter Ji Hye's marital problems with her husband (Lee Min Woo) and younger son Ho Sub's pursuit of his mother's assistant, played by Nam Sang Mi (Time Between Dog and Wolf).

The story thread that attracted the most attention though is Song Chang Ui, as oldest son Tae Sub, and his romantic pairing with Lee Sang Woo (The Road Home), as divorced professor Kyung Soo. The drama sensitively portrayed the two men's relationship and how their families reacted to the revelation of their relationship, addressing issues of personal, social,and familial acceptance. Though the groundbreaking portrayal of an openly gay couple placed the primetime drama in the center of controversy in Korea, Life is Beautiful stayed true to its heart as a story about family, love, and understanding.
