Gritty tale of real life
"Life Show" tells of Lai Shuangyang (Tao Hung), a beautiful woman on the verge of middle age, who has suffered great disappointments in her life, but, through the power of her great will and persistence, has built a successful food stand in a shopping district in Chongqing. Her strong character has made her both relied upon and resented within her family. Circumstances have required her to acquire a degree of ruthlessness and a thick skin. The stresses of her life are apparent, but hope for relief arrives in the form of a rich businessman who begins to frequent her food stall. She lets her guard down to give herself to him. Will she be rewarded or betrayed for allowing this vulnerability? Director Huo Jian Qi brings a sure hand and a palpable air of mystery to this memorable film. Tao Hung's performance is simply superb; she brings the full range of human emotion to her character. I very highly recommend both this film and director Huo's earlier great film, "Postman in the Mountains". |

Another good movie by Huo Jian Qi
We have to pay close attention to a very, very good director from China from now on, Huo Jian Qi. Just watched all three of his movies: this one, "Postman in the Mountains" and "Love of Blueness". All very good and interesting. Tao Hung is excellent in this one. A woman who operates a small food stand. The movie is about her survival and her courage. Director Huo always chooses his actors well as he does in the other two films. So do his stories and scenery. My favorite of the three is "The Postman in the Mountains". All three are worthy. |
