  • January 17, 2012 Very disappointing Customer Review Rated Bad 2 - 2 out of 10
This is the fourth film I bought from YesAsia, but it really disappoints me. The first 3 films I bought chronologically are "The Spirit of the Sword" [Nicholas Tse, Liu Tek Kai], "Condor Hero" [Huang Xiao Ming, Liu Yi Fei] and "The Book and the Sword" [Adam Cheng, Liu Tek Kai] and my satisfaction kept growing. But then I watch this Lee wok Lap's adaptation of the originally beautiful kungfu series of Louis Cha - I feel angry and sad. Among the above four films, this one is the worst. In general most of the actors/actresses cannot act naturally and some of them, including Hu Ge, overacts their parts so that Guo Jing many times becomes like an idiot. Ariel Lin cannot portrays the Huang Rong you read in the book, either. Additionally, it seems that Lee Kwok Lap likes to dramatize anything whenever possible and dwells in long emotional speeches. The story is at least 35% different from the book. I could not stand watching about seven episodes in Discs 1 & 2, when the director dedicated them just to dramatize the Yang Kang - Wanyan Honglie relationship. With the quality of the fight scenes similar only to 1980s kungfu films and the English translation having a mistake in almost every sentence, I cannot appreciate much of this film. This will be the first and the last Lee Kwok Lap film I watch. But if you love soap operas, you have not read the book or watched any earlier versions of the same film, and you do not mind all the above factors I mentioned, you may still be able to enjoy watching this film.

December 22, 2011 Simply marvelous Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This is the third DVD I bought from YesAsia, and it is the best. Almost all the cast played wonderfully. The best ones were those who played Emperor Qian Long, Chen Jia Luo's master, the Queen Dowager, He Shen, Bai Zhen, Zhao Qi and of course the Ninth Prince. Although I have never read the book, I trust the script follows it closely - or otherwise I believe it would not be that superb. The fights were great and there were only a few 2 - 3 minute slow parts in the whole series. The only thing I do not like are some 'f...' words on the English translation. There were some bad translation which sometimes were funny, like 'sweet talk' being translated into 'sweat talk'. But when you start following the Hollywood's culture of swearing 'f...' word, the movie suddenly loses some of its elegance. Nevertheless, if you can forget those 'f...' words, you will find that this film is simply marvelous!

September 11, 2011 Could have been much better Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
First, the upsides. Crystal Liu is superb playing Xiao Long Nue. She can portray the changes excellently from the emotionless or cold Xiao Long Nue into one with emotions and who finally falls in love. The fights are also wonderful and fascinating. Other actors who act very well in my view are Gongsun Zhi and his creepy wife. And the final upside point is that this film follows the novel dliligently, at least 95%. HOWEVER, this is apparently a cut version and the person who did the editing seems to think more about romanticness and less about the coherence of the film. The editor cuts all parts of the time Yang Gor spends in the Plum Blossom Island. So you will be a bit lost several times if you have not read the novel. For instance, how on earth can Yang Gor call Ouyang Feng 'father'? And how can Yang Gor suddenly know a blind man by the name of Uncle Ke of the Seven Freaks from Jiang Nan in the second or third last episode? A few moments of flashbacks in the film certainly do not answer those issues to non-readers. Had the part about Yang Gor's childhood at the Island not deleted, it would have kept the coherence of the film. The editor also cut the epilogue of the story, which is crucial to link to the Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre story. The actor who plays Yang Gor does not play so well, either, which adds onto the downside. I can explain, though, that the novel notes that Yang Gor in the end looks older but Xiao Long Nue remains heavenly beautiful and looks younger than him. We should be more concerned with Ying Gu, who must have found the formula to get rid of her wrinkles in this film. The novel says that she looks like a grandma with white hair, but the film shows a young lady with white hair. A final downside point is the editor's attempt to put a touch at the last episode between Guo Xiang and Rev. Jin Lun - this is the worst part in the film in my view. The idea must have come from a cheap soap opera, which is unfair for this novel of Jin Yong's. Nevertheless, I understand that it is not easy to make a good film out of a good novel. Most parts of the film are made very well, so I still recommend this film, especially because many people including myself consider it as the most beautiful love story.

    August 6, 2011 Satisfied Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
This is one of the first two TV series I got from YesAsia. Service is very satisfactory, as it arrived within the estimated time and in excellent shape. The quality of DVDs is also excellent. The players' acting is above average; the best one I find is the actress playing Benyue. I do find that this film is different from the book or even from the bigscreen movie made circa 1982. Theer are some slow episodes, too. But the kungfu fights are very good. All in all, I recommend this TV series, especially at such a big discount.
