Following his acclaimed drama In the Bedroom, Todd Field's second film, Little Children, casts a discerning light on that most curious and ubiquitous slice of Americana: suburbia. Adapted from Tom Perrotta's renowned novel, the film takes viewers past the clean sidewalks and mowed lawns into the seemingly normal lives of some very normal people, whose familiar middle-class façades fall away to reveal varying levels of dysfunction. While undermining the suburban myth is certainly not a new theme, Field does so in a candid, witty, and observant manner, making the story and its various flawed characters convincing and engaging. Moving things along is the top-notch casting of Kate Winslet, Jennifer Connelly, Patrick Wilson, Noah Emmerich, and former child actor Jackie Earle Haley.
Bored to death with her mundane life, housewife and mother Sarah Pierce (Kate Winslet) strikes up a passionate affair with househusband Brad Adamson (Patrck Wilson). The new relationship invigorates Brad, who has been long troubled by the fact that his wife Kathy (Jennifer Connelly) brings home the bacon. To further reclaim his masculinity, he joins a football league with Larry Hedges (Noah Emmerich), an ex-cop who has taken to harassing former sex offender Ronnie McGorvey (Jackie Earle Haley). As tensions build, relationships collide, and secrets are revealed, each will have to answer for their own mistakes and actions.
