When Hong Kong's new wave, gravity-defying action-look hit the scene in the early 1980's, so did a new wave of actors; Canto-pop stars. Little Dragon Maiden intelligently mixed the old with the new to create pure golden magic as kung-fu fighting veterans Chen Kuan-tai and Lo Lieh joined relative newcomer Leslie Cheung in a far-out, costume-action love story that really cooks. Cheung garnered international recognition in John Woo's A Better Tomorrow.

Little Dragon Maiden Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This film has a lot going for it.The story, although taken from a novel flows nicely throughout the film. The characters are given enough screen time to provide adequate character development.Yung Ching Ching a.k.a. Mary Jean Reimer) really steals the movie.Lau Suet(Lady Assassin) makes an appearance in a few scenes and Tanny Tien plays Yung's sister. The choreography is not bad here, and the Shaw sets and costumes are eye opening as always.Although Yung Chin Chin's career at Shaw is limited, this film is worth seeing.

Good early film by Leslie Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Leslie Cheung delivers a solid performance in this colorful depiction of a Jin Yong novel. Yung Ching Ching, as the Dragon Girl, proves a good match for Leslie's charismatic charm. Yung not only looks appealing, but does a creditable job in all the wirework and swordplay required of her. (Mary Jean, you can be my lawyer any time!)

The plot is a bit of a jumble (something about squabbles among martial arts clans and Mongol invaders), but the movie moves at such a quick pace that the viewer is drawn blissfully along through the story's many twists and turns. Lo Lieh pops up in a small comic role; I wish we could have seen more of him.

I was prepared to give the film an even higher grade until, near the end of the movie, Leslie is saved by an overweight giant condor that resembles Big Bird's long-lost Chinese cousin. After that sequence, the movie is brought to a fairly abrupt ending. I have a hard time believing that this corpulent condor is quite what Louis Cha had in mind.

Nonetheless, I highly recommend this film for a general audience.

Leslie once again showed his professionalism Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Leslie, as always, showed his high level of professionalism here. There was a scene of him learning the Chinese kung-fu. He had to kneel down and try to breathe as a toad. You could see his cheeks blew up like two big balloons - you would understand what I meant if you've seen how Louis Armstrong blew the trumpet. Imagine, how our little prince put in his best efforts to make the best result. Leslie, you always are the best. Thank you and I love you.

Great movie!!! =) Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This was a very entertaining and well filmed kung fu drama from Shaw Brothers. I was very impressed by the young Leslie Cheung in it. He did a wonderful job, playing the main character in an endearing, naive, and very cute way. The other actors, including the actress who played the Little Dragon Maiden, also performed well. The movie moved at a really good, non-draggy pace. It retells the original story by Jin Yong in an abbrievated way without making you feel like the movie was imcomplete after you watched it. It's definitely a movie worth seeing. I've watched it several times already. The picture and sound quality are superb as well. They made this twenty year old movie look as good as new.

Little Dragon Maiden Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
In the original Jin Yong's classic, main lead Yang Guo was supposingly to be only one-armed at the latter part of the story and waited 18 years for his master Little Dragon Maiden... however these were not captured in this movie. Overall, still ok to watch if you're not that particular.
