Twins have temporarily parted ways with the release of Charlene Choi's first solo album Lonely Me in April 2009. Amidst speculation over the fate of the beloved Canto-pop girl group, the album's main plug "Two Without One" relates how the broken-hearted singer is missing her partner after they split, which is an explicit reference to her state of mind during the down time of Twins partner Gillian Chung. The album also includes Charlene's 2008 charity single Make a Wish, her hit duet "Little Dimples" with Singapore singer JJ Lin, and the Cantonese and Mandarin versions of the theme song to Charlene's recent movie Butterfly Lovers. The Bonus DVD has four music videos. This version comes with an album poster.

I am surprised that Charlene released a solo album, because I thought she will be waiting for Gillian. The album is very different from Twins' albums, because the songs are not as cheerful and dancing. Charlene always describes her album as "moody" and I agree with her. There are more sadness in the songs. It might relates to the temporary split with Gillian. "Two Missing One", especially the Mandarin version, is a very great song to represent Twins' situation. Charlene definitely can express the emotion through this song. "I'm Sorry" is not a bad song, but somehow I don't like the yelling towards the end. I love that this album included "Little Dimple," because it has a very sweet melody. The songs for "Butterfly Lovers" have a sadness tone. They're very sentimental. Overall, this album reflects the mature side of Charlene. It's worth to purchase this album.

Not bad for a first try Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
I didn`t know of Twins until a few months ago, so it`s a little like coming to the table when everyone else has eaten. Suddenly this album came and, no, it`s not bad, but it`s not terribly exciting either. I think Charlene`s always had an attractive voice, but I feel it`s more of a harmony voice than a solo voice. Also I was not too happy about the videos. And all those ballads, one after another...I understand the need to reflect and also possibly relax now, but a slight change of tempo here and there would not, I think, have ruined the mood. Although I do prefer the first two albums by our girls, we all change and maybe this is one of those albums that grow on you. I am glad I bought it, for I want to suport Charlene, and Gillian too, whatever she decides to do. Thank you fellow customers for your comments and explanations.

First of all, to numinair, I think your comment was brilliant. Well explained.

I think this CD is really good, all the songs are meaningful and Charlene's singing skills have definitely improved. It is evident that Charlene has worked very hard on this album, so we have to give her credit for that.

I think 2008 has been a very difficult time for Twins, and not only has Gillian suffered a lot, but Charlene has also suffered from all the pressure. This CD reflects Charlene's feelings and I agree with numinair, it is not the right time for up-tempo songs to be put on the album.

I also agree with Hajime, that the recent Twins songs are not as good as their old songs. But I guess their image is maturing and they have to venture into more mature songs. We have to remember that they're reaching 30 years old, so they can't be singing children's songs forever. But their recent songs are nowhere near as good as their old classics :P

My favourite song is "Crossover" as it really demonstrates Charlene's vocals.

Overall, great CD. Looking for Twins to come back!!

Twin Solo - but catchy, tender mid tempos Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10

I wasn’t sure what song mix would be featured on Charlene’s solo début here, but with Twins on hold and the mood of things, a more vibrant and celebratory album might be deemed too insensitive or premature. So although I’d love more fast songs and Twins spirit, it’s not quite the right moment here. Charlene too is a growing woman, and I’m sure this album reflects as much about her mature dealings with life, as with sudden changes. Anyway, as a solo debut it’s not a bad album, and most songs are good solid mid tempo ones, having slow beginnings moving into swifter tuneful melodies. The more moderate Twins song format really, but being both bright and cheerful, blended with logical mood and sadness. If you liked “Twins Party” or “New Mandarin 2008” mid tempo songs, then “Two Without One” is near those. And they’re certainly catchy. Even some electric guitar interpolations on tracks 4 and 5. The opener “Two Without One” is no doubt the new big song and “I’m Sorry” is Ah Sa’s own personal and very moving song, with a lovely sung refrain. Two excellent songs. Tracks 3-5 are also good new additions. “Butterfly Lovers” theme is no doubt a fantastic song; you get immediate goose bumps and tears to the eyes on each listen.

This album is in two sections as such. The first 6 songs being new ones and the latter six a filler mixture of the Mando version of “Two Without One”, Canto and Mando versions of the Butterfly Lovers song, the Make a Wish single and Canto and Mando versions of “Little Dimples”. All songs blend well and it’s a good overall package with the singing, song writing, arrangements making for a quality album. The DVD’s MVs are a bit solemn though; all shot in a worn old movie style and carry a sense of sadness, relating to separated relationships. All four interestingly have a continuity of sorts. I feel Charlene’s already worn the t-shirt with solo songs, as with “Viva Ah Hey”, and this CD really extends on that, and Charlene sings well here. She certainly misses Gillian, no doubt. Surely another Twins work will come. Maybe “Twins - Survival Binary” by Christmas? Okay I’m supposing and made the title up (sorry), but surely when, not if now. But for now, the blessing is in Charlene’s solo album that certainly won’t disappoint. Not a slam-dunk Twins CD to dance and groove too, but more one to reflect upon.
