Cult writer-artist Miura Jun, Gamera special effects guru Higuchi Shinji, and SFX designer-turned-director Kiyotaka Taguchi team up to make the kaiju parody Long Haired Giant Monster: Gehara! This mini monster movie sendup was produced for NHK's late-night series Play TV: Perform!, and later screened at the 2009 Yubari Fantastic Film Festival where it picked up the runner-up prize. The monster short is about Japan getting invaded by a giant monster with long black locks, and the Self-Defense Force's efforts to stop the vicious hairball. Mixing Japanese ghostlore, impressive visual effects, cheeky humor, and monster movie madness, Long Haired Giant Monster: Gehara squeezes more entertainment into its 17-minute running time than most films do in two hours. Other than the eponymous beast, Long Haired Giant Monster: Gehara stars Osawa Ken (Samurai Fiction) as a reporter covering the monster story as well as Fujii Mina (Ame no Tsubasa), kaiju regular Sano Shiro, Taguchi Tomorrow, and Tsuda Kanji.
