Out of the Shaw Brothers vaults comes Love in a Fallen City, an early-eighties drama featuring the combination of award-winning director Ann Hui and Hong Kong actor supreme Chow Yun Fat! Cora Miu is Liu Siu Pai, an aging divorcee in 1940's Shanghai, whose inability to get remarried is a frustration for herself and her family. Pai agrees to visit Hong Kong to meet Mr. Fan (Chow Yun Fat), a seemingly-insensitive gentleman who recognizes something within Pai, and begins to ardently woo her. Pai has her guard up, but Fan's charm and persistence begin to have an effect. Meanwhile, the Japanese are on the verge of invading Hong Kong, sending Pai and Fan's small, intimate world into complete chaos. Based on a novel by celebrated Chinese author Eileen Chang, Love in a Fallen City is one of the most welcome discoveries from the Shaw Brothers vaults. The combination of Chow Yun Fat and Ann Hui, and a story of love found beneath the shadow of war, makes Love in a Fallen City an emotional, heartbreaking drama.

Good Chow Yun Fat film

In "Love in a Fallen City", international businessman and playboy Mr. Fan (Chow Yun Fat) pursues the love of quiet spinster divorcee Pai (Cora Miao). Is Mr. Fan sincere or is he just looking for another conquest? In many ways, the story of "Love in a Fallen City" resembles that of a Jane Austen novel, with endless agonizing over motives and manners, and a gossiping family pushing Ms. Pai to get married. Chow Yun Fat is perfect in his role as Mr. Fan; he has never been more dashingly handsome than he is here. Cora Miao is more problematic. Given her repressed appearance and personality, one is never quite sure why Mr. Fan is so attracted to her. However, Ms. Miao has the film's greatest moment, when she finally and entirely falls for Mr. Fan. The way she depicts her total abandon to his love is utterly convincing. Ann Hui's filmmaking is workmanlike, nothing too flashy to detract from the story, although many may find the first half of the film to be too "talky". I can recommend "Love in a Fallen City for a general audience. Fans of Chow Yun Fat definitely will want to see this one. |

A Story You Will Never Forget
| You will love it! Chow and Miao's performance is great. You can see the other side of Chow. Then, you will know a lot about ladies at that time. Marriage is everything... and true love is scarcely seen, but then, Liu So, who wants to marry a good man, and Lui Yuan, who wants true love, but not marriage find their soul mates and true self in the war. It is very romantic, and very good. |

CHOW YUN FAT was the Chinese Clark Gable !!!

So Chow Yun Fat was a romantic leading man before he came a suave killer !!! It was indeed revealing to see Chow in a different setting, doing little devilish smiles and giving the leading lady some suffocating kisses ! Do Chinese playboys do all that in those days ? Was it the authoress' fertile imagination or just Chow's sensuality couldn't be held back on the screen, whatever was true, Chow is definitely a screen romantic hero! Would somebody do a Chinese version of "An Affair to Remember" ? Chow would be perfect for the Cary Grant role ! |
