YesAsia Editorial Description
Merely four months after Princess, Taiwan's reigning ballad prince Jam Hsiao is ready to release his next album Love Moments. As a warm-up to his upcoming Mr. Rock concerts, the album is Jam's tribute to some of the classic love songs that he has been in love with. All the 10 songs selected are originally performed by a host of untouchable Mando-pop divas, including Stefanie Sun, Jolin Tsai, Amei Chang, Tanya Chua, Faye Wong, Jody Chiang, Na Ying, Wan Fang, Shunza, and Karen Mok. Jam revealed that he's so familiar with these songs, he needed less than a month to record the entire album with a live band, a feat that left Golden Melody award-winning producer Adia totally in awe! Upon closer inspection, one would notice on the track list that Wan Fang's "C'est La Vie, Mon Cheri" is the song that Jam crashed out of One Million Star in 2007 with. Chosen to be the first plug off Love Moments, Jam's new rendition of the song represents a chance at personal redemption for him, and he vows to do it full justice this time!

Cover Jams

Considering Jam Hsiao first shot to fame performing covers, it's only fitting that he releases a cover album at some point or another. With the proliferation and popularity of singing talent shows, however, just about every song that can be rediscovered and covered has been already so there is little surprise to the selection in Love Moments. Some One Million Star contestant has sung every song in this album. What Jam presents in his versions of ten classic songs from contemporary Chinese divas then is not something new and exciting, but rather something assuring: the songs are great to begin with, and Jam can sing better than the rest. The album's first song is my favorite of the lot, Faye Wong's alternative pop piece Kai Dao Tu Mi (Track 1). It's hard to match the attitude and cool angst of Faye's lilting original, but Jam's smooth rock vocals are perfect for the song. After opening strong, the album settles into softer sounds with a cover of Wan Fang's "New Endless Love" (Track 2). It's been a while since Jam and Aska Yang captivated Taiwan with their competing performances of "New Endless Love" on the first season of One Million Star. Back then, Jam updated the classic ballad with a jazz arrangement, but he plays it straight this time with a clean, emotional rendition. Jam and company opt for a clean and simple sound for most of the songs on the album, with Jam toning down his voice for gentle and comforting takes of Karen Mok's "If Without You" (Track 3), Stefanie Sun's "What I Miss" (Track 6), Tanya Chua's "Commemorate" (Track 7), and Na Ying's "Just a Dream" (Track 4). There aren't many singers that can bring out the quiet devastation of "Just a Dream", but Jam hits the notes and the sentiments beautifully with just acoustic guitar accompaniment. For this song, he sings the high notes a bit differently, more traditional and balladic than his usual strong belting voice. Jam also does a wonderful job with Shunza's "Write a Song" (Track 8), his deep, dramatic vocals going unexpectedly well with the sweet and jaunty mid-tempo ballad. The backing vocals by Adia, who produced and did the backing vocal arrangement for all the songs in the album, are particularly notable in this track. Jam's performance of Jody Chiang's sublime ballad "Silent Flower" (Track 5), however, falls just a bit short. Many Mando-pop singers, no matter how vocally talented, have difficulty capturing the melodramatic enka-like flavor of Hokkien songs, and Jam faces this same challenge. He goes with a half-traditional singing style against a modern pop arrangement for an updated version of "Silent Flower" that's pleasing to the ears, but the partly pop, partly Hokkien quality feels less like a deliberate style than a reflection of vocal reality. The album's last two tracks are the karaoke favorites. A-mei Chang's power ballad "Remember" (Track 9) has been sung too many times by too many people to leave a fresh impression at this point. What can be said about Jam though is that his singing style and vocal power are actually quite similar to A-mei's so his cover of "Remember" really sounds like the definitive male version of the song. Love Moments ends with its most dubious entry, Jolin Tsai's "Rewind" (Track 10), which hardly qualifies as a classic in comparison to the other songs, though its inclusion does bring something different to the album that another cover of "Sky" (the more obvious choice for a Jolin classic) might not have. "Rewind" is very much a straightforward mainstream Mando-pop ballad, composed by the man who's defined mainstream Mando-pop in the last decade no less, but this actually gives Jam the space to belt it out. He held back his voice for many of the other songs to balance the composition and arrangement, but with "Rewind" he concludes with the kind of powerful vocal performance he's known for. Love Moments is very much a safe cover album, offering a discreet update to well-known songs and basically letting Jam Hsiao's outstanding vocals take care of the rest. As a point of comparison, a singer that Jam is often paired with, Khalil Fong, also released a cover album this year, Timeless, which is significantly more ambitious and less commercial in terms of song selection and arrangement. Timeless is more interesting, Love Moments is more listenable. If Love Moments was Jam's only release of the year, it would feel lacking for not being original and ambitious enough; but as his second album of the year, Love Moments comes as more of a vocal showcase and a bonus for music fans. |

The first three tracks are my favorites in this CD. They are not perfect though. 01. 開到荼靡:This is my favorite song in the album. Jam Hsiao sings nicely in this mid to moderate fast tempo r&b. Music composition is the best in this CD. The music accompaniments can be better. 04. 夢一場:Singing and music are both simplistic with good guitar accompaniment. It is a good ballad, kind of like a folk song. 08. 寫一首歌:Good singing technique and again, percussion can be better. There is English in the middle of the song. It is a pleasant r&b. 02. 新不了情:Nice singing in this ballad until last quarter of the track. Music accompaniments are bad. 05. 無言花:Bad music at the first 30 seconds. Singing is good while music is bad. The drums drag a little, while the piano is a little better. 06. 我懷念的:Good singing with simple piano accompaniment until more music accompaniments start in the middle of the track. The song begins to deteriorate at the last third and tries to recover at the last 15 seconds, but to no avail. 09. 記得: The song drags at the beginning, but singing is good. It gets better later on. All in all, I think Jam Hsiao is an excellent and talented singer with potentials to develop into an even greater singer. I think his music company can do better for him. They should at least improve the music accompaniments. I wish to hear more creative songs from Jam Hsiao in the future. I wish continuing success to Jam Hsiao! :) |
