Whether or not we want to except it or not, ayu (avex "queen" of j-pop) is slowly but surely churning out some of the worst music that the normally broad and well thought out company usually supplies to their ever-growing audience. While ayu's record sales do not mirror the above statment, they are nowhere near the incredible sales records that were coming in at the turn of the millenium. So what the heck does ayumi hamasaki have to do with relative newcomer ootsuka ai? well, ayu might just wanna watch her back and hold on dearly to that crown. ootuka ai is probably the most vibrant, colorful and heartfelt artist on the j-pop scene today. She's more than just a cute and strong voice, but a great pianist as well, which provided great and original character to a number of her songs. Her 400,000 copy selling single "sakuranbo" was written by ootsuka herself, as well as all the songs on the album. While many of her songs, including the best-selling "sakuranbo", are cute, fresh and very cheerful, her more heartfelt and tender songs such as "shabondama" and "amenbo" prove that ootsuka is more than just a "cute girl", but a powerful singer with a lot on her mind and a bright future ahead of her. The entire album could be paralleled to life itself- happy, quiet, sad and lonesome, humerous, and as the closing track suggests to us all, to be close to one another and be "always together". |
