Love Unto Wastes (DVD) (Hong Kong Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

Before making the acclaimed Rouge with the late Anita Mui and Leslie Cheung, Stanley Kwan directed his second feature film, Love Unto Wastes in 1986. Though less popular than Rouge, the film is loved by Hong Kong Cinema fans, and stars Chow Yun Fat, Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Elaine Jin, Tsai Chin, and Irene Wan. While the actors were quite green when making Love Unto Wastes, all of them enjoyed much greater fame later in their careers, especially Chow and Leung who are now famous worldwide. As for the three leading actresses, Elaine Jin has made a name in Taiwanese cinema, like Edward Yang's Yi Yi, whereas Tsai Chin is now an acclaimed singer. Irene Wan found much popularity in TVB dramas in the 1990s. William Chang, who later created the beautiful settings for many Wong Kar Wai movies, served as the art director for Love Unto Wastes.

Two Taiwanese girls, Jade (Elaine Jin) and Suk-ling (Tsai Chin) come to Hong Kong and befriend Hong Kong model Billie (Irene Wan). All of them share the same quest for fame. They come across a handsome young man Jean Cheung (Tony Leung) and he immediately falls for the gorgeous Billie. After celebrating Jade's birthday, Suk-ling is murdered on her way home. Sergeant Lan (Chow Yun Fat), a lonely divorcee, starts to investigate the case and gets to know these three young people. The love triangle among Jade, Billie, and Jean marks Love Unto Wastes as a romance, but the unresolved murder case enriches the film with a mysterious dimension, making it a title worth revisiting 20 years after its making.

Professional Review of "Love Unto Wastes (DVD) (Hong Kong Version)"

November 6, 2006

This professional review refers to Love Unto Wastes (VCD) (Hong Kong Version)
The question is asked: "What breaks our hearts?" There's no one answer, but this movie comes close: as tender as regret, as insubstantial as smoke it breezes by with barely a whisper and leaves a stain on your heart. Stanley Kwan's second movie is at once eloquent, tragic, halting, and humorous as it tries to map out what makes us hurt.

Three female friends from Taiwan share an apartment in Hong Kong: Chiu Suk-ling (Cai Qin) a shovel-faced singer whose lack of good looks is compensated by a nurturing den mother personality; Liu (Elaine Jin who played Hsu Qi's mother in Gorgeous and Nic Tse's mother in Metade Fumaca) is an actress out of work for two years and trying to find a way back into the business; and Billie Yuen (Irene Wan) a young model whose career is just starting to take off.

Like drifting asteroids, Jean Cheung (Tony Leung Chiu-wai, who keeps chirping, "Call me Tony,") and Chow Yun-fat (the closest a Hong Kong film has come to replicating Columbo) are pulled gently into the women's orbit and everything is idyllic, until a murder freezes the warm human connections between men and women. Kwan doesn't pick out the murderer, he doesn't point fingers, pull out his hair or try to explain. When men and women fall in love, someone gets hurt. Sometimes killed.

There's a dewy freshness to the performances here. Elaine Jin, Cai Qin, Tony Leung, Chow Yun-fat and Stanley Kwan are all in the first bloom of their careers and they seem as innocent and wide-eyed as newborn babes. The considerable, cancerous evil one of them brings to the table is all the more shocking in light of this. The women are at once as comprehensible and impenetrable as the women we've come to expect from Stanley Kwan. Tony Leung is adorable as a jug-eared nouveau yuppie, and Chow Yun-fat is a bottomless well of compassion, forgiveness and human understanding.

Tracing the lives and loves of Hong Kong yuppies, Stanley Kwan maps a delicate topography that moves from Hong Kong high rises and clubs, to crumbling go-downs; from Hong Kong to Taiwan and back again. Without roots, but not without feelings, his actors are like beautiful, perfect peaches. It hurts to watch the way they bruise themselves.

Stephen Teo, the noted Hong Kong film critic, considers this Kwan's breakthrough film, and despite a few stiff edits and line-readings, one can see his point.
