Another Lin Dai gem

Lin Dai quickly is becoming my favorite actress. Is there anything she couldn't do on screen? Her performance in this film is subtle, yet riveting. I agree with the previous reviewer that the B&W cinematography adds to the drama of this top-notch four-hankie soaper. Highly recommended. |

Another POWERFUL performance from Lam Doi

Lam Doi won her fourth and last BEST ACTRESS award from the Asian Film Festival by her performance in this beautifully realized melodrama. For those who has an aversion to black & white films ,which unfortunately many Asian movie film fans are, this is one fine example to see how b & w can heightened the dramatic impact of subjects that are not pretty to begin with (such as sickness, death, greed etc). I was prepared to see a dated melodrama only to be amazed by Lam Doi's acting and that wonderful song which I can't get tired of over all these years! Here's a salute to Celestial for the beautiful b & w restoration, let's see more of Lam Doi's earlier films and of course lets see some with happy endings for a change--such as "Les Belles" her third Best Actress performance. |
