Bright, fluffy, and guiltily enjoyable, Lovely Complex is the feature film answer to Japanese teen drama goodness. Based on Nakahara Aya's manga, Lovely Complex tells the sometimes angsty, but mostly silly story of a budding high school romance between a tall girl and a not-so-tall guy. The film's wardrobe and set design has the colorful subtlety of an Easter basket full of Lisa Frank stationary, lanky lead actress Fujisawa Emi lays on the Kansai accent and exaggerated expressions, and lead actor Koike Teppei looks blissfully clueless for most of the film's duration. Cinema doesn't get much lighter than this, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
The English subtitles proudly declare Lovely Complex to be a "juvenile love story", and the film gamely lives up to the designation, weaning humor out of nosebleeds, hairpieces, and clumsy falls. Other comedic touches include fairy-tale voiceover narration in accented English, a kooky TV show, and anime-type features like freezing the frame and pulling out to provide inane commentary. The funniest parts though are the small moments - short zingers, Fujisawa Emi's awkward postures, Koike Teppei's blank face. Sporadic bursts of hijinks aside, Lovely Complex is actually remarkably calm and uneventful until the fourth quarter when a romantic rival appears and sanity falls off the adolescent deep end. But before that, most of the film plays out like a high school yearbook, with episodic segments, insecure conversations, and important-when-you're-sixteen events marking time as each school year passes by and the protagonists ponder whether romance can overcome height difference. Suffice to say, Lovely Complex lives firmly in high school shoujo land: there's the temple festival, the high school fair haunted house, the school trip, karaoke bonding, rooftop conversations, hanging out at the retro diner. With so many youth drama staples in place, Lovely Complex feels like a short and sweet rolled-up ball of slice-of-life school-based TV dramas like Dragon Zakura, Proposal Daisakusen, and Nobuta wo Produce, with some Teppei TV moments thrown in for fan-service measure. The simple narrative and straightforward structure, however, provide the right balance for the cartoon goofs and slapstick comedy, making the sentiments feel quietly genuine amid the overall loudness. By keeping the proceedings minor and characters oblivious, the film never falls into the trap of discounting itself by aiming for too much meaning and drama. Heartily embracing its live-action shoujo identity with candy colors, offbeat humor, and pleasant trivialities, Lovely Complex may be a juvenile love story, but it's an entertaining one. |

I wanted to watch the anime, but it was not that good, so I didn't watch it in the end. But then I saw the Live Action, and once as I was sick, I watched it. It was a surprise. Though I was sick, but I felt me more better, then before the movie XD. Just buy, you will not be disappointed ^^! |

"Lovely Complex" is the brightest, funniest, most joyful teen romantic comedy I've seen in a very long while. Fujisawa Ema stars as Koizumi Risa, a towering high school girl who has just had her heart broken by a boy who has rejected her advances simply because he is considerably shorter than her. Koike Teppei plays Otani Atsushi, a high school boy turned down by a taller girl. Risa and Atsushi are classmates; all of their friends see that the two are perfect for each other, but both Risa and Atsushi have vowed to seek someone their own size. It's a clever twist on the familiar 'odd couple' theme and "Lovely Complex" mines the premise for comic gold. The film is loaded with many of the tropes we've seen again and again in Japanese teen flicks, but here they are served up with such delightful creative verve that they seem fresh. Much of that freshness is attributable to the extraordinary performance of Fujisawa Ema. This is a role that demands that the vast range of supercharged teen emotions be delivered with boldness and with lightning-quick shifts in tone. Miss Fujisawa seems born for this role; she is utterly believable. Koike Teppei, in a relatively muted performance, is a perfect complement to the zany Fujisawa. The two share a wonderful chemistry. Watching these two teens bumblingly stumble in the direction of love is richly entertaining. Unlike these inept sweethearts, "Lovely Complex" almost never misses a step. (Only a climactic basketball game seemed out of place.) It kept me in stitches from start to finish and made me care about these goofy but charming high school kids. Don't miss this one! |
