Adapted from a short story by acclaimed writer Pai Hsien Yung (who was a professor of Chinese at the University of Southern California-Santa Barbara for almost three decades), Love's Lone Flower tells a story of oppressed love and distorted human nature like many other literary works by Pai. The TV drama stars top actresses Anita Yuen (He's A Woman She's A Man), Angelica Lee (Three), and Suzanne Hsiao (Yi Yi), who team up with veteran actor Tou Chung Hua for this intriguing drama series. Director Cao Ruiyuan previously also created the TV series Crystal Boys, based on Pai Hsien Yung's work on the lives of gay youth in 1970s Taiwan. With a strong cast and delicate direction, Love's Lone Flower carries a tenderness that is seldom found in Taiwanese dramas.

Yun Fang (Anita Yuen) is a courtesan in Shanghai, extremely popular among influential men. But she only has eyes for female nightclub singer Wubao (Angelica Lee), whom musician San Lang (Tou Chung Hua) also finds attractive. When the Civil War breaks out in China, Yun Fang moves to Taiwan. While she meets San Lang again, Wubao is nowhere to be seen. However, Yun Fang encounters another girl (Suzanne Hsiao) who resembles Wubao in many ways...

　　十里洋場的風月夜上海，歌舞昇平中瀰漫著一股末世的?廢與華麗。「雲芳」，一個風華絕代的舞女，男人們為她傾倒，但她鍾情的卻是五寶，一個娟秀靈兮，惹人憐愛的小歌女。而來自台灣的音樂家三郎，亦為五寶傾心。於是音樂家的情愛，交織在舞女雲芳與歌女五寶之間。直至戰亂，迫使三人分離失所。

　　歲月流轉，雲芳至台灣後再與三郎再遇，卻只留滿面滄桑與寂寥。
　　娟娟，一個青春潔白的生命卻有著最不堪的成長歷程，她如五寶再現般使雲芳與音樂家對五寶未盡的情感暫時有了停泊的港灣。在時光流轉與命運交錯間，娟娟∕五寶、五寶∕娟娟的生命不斷膠著、纏綿於兩人內在底層與記憶角落。

　　In Shanghai, the air was all romantic and delirious, tinted with the glamour and loneliness of fin de siecle.

　　A touching romance was brewing among the musician San-Lang, dancing Yuenfang, and a young woman singer Wubao. It lasted till Wubao's death in war.
　　
　　Down and out, and merged in desolation, the musician encountered Yuenfang again in Taiwan.

　　However, seasons and times change. Sigh was the only thing that was ever left.

　　A young and pure soul as Juan Juan was undergoing the most unbearable life experience.

　　Her presence represented the reappearance of Wubao. Therefore Yuenfang and the musician can temporally place the incomplete love with Wubao on Juan Juan.

In the passage of time and at the intersection of fate, the lives of juan Juan & Wubao, Wubao & Juan Juan constantly raveled and overlapped: they are intertwined at the bottoms of their hearts, and the corner of their memory.
