小鎮醫生王利一心裡暗暗喜歡家裡新來的護士劉光美，一天早上，醫生竟無故失蹤了。太太娘月琴，大兒子在乎，媳婦素淳，以及光美，大家都發慌了，醫生到底怎麼了，這種事從來沒發生過。
事實是，那天一早，天還沒有亮，利一背著相機，一個人搭早班客運車到海邊看海去了。醫生第二天上午回到診所，大家鬆了一口氣，卻沒有人看出這次醫生出走的任何意義，只有利一自己心裡明白，當然，光美多少也是明白一點的。月琴自然知道利一和光美的秘密，卻不便聲張，心裡則覺異常痛苦。不久，醫生的小兒子在論從美國留學回來，甫抵家門，想不到他竟也看上了光美，在這同時，月琴病倒了，口口聲聲要和利一離婚。而在論在一次夜歸的情況下，不經意發現了父親和光美的曖昧關係，當下驚異不已，遂決定提早前去台北，依原先計劃，和朋友合夥開廣告公司。月琴則不理會利一的挽留，堅決搬去豐原表叔公家裡，終日種植花草。利一帶光美到鹿港游玩，回來後，光美決意離開診所，前去台北發展，她去找在論，在論介紹她去當模特兒。利一無法忘懷光美，對月琴則心懷欺疚之情。天有不測風雲，月琴高血壓病心，利一眾人趕到時已經回天乏術，利一內疚不已。故事結束於月琴死後不久，光美回診所看利一，兩人相對，卻不知所云，回顧前塵，徒留感傷悲嘆而已。
