In 1989, Golden Horse Award-winning scriptwriter Wu Nien Jen and director Yang Li Guo adapted Chung Chao Cheng's novel into the Taiwan film The Dull-Ice Flower, which proved popular with moviegoers. Fast-forward 20 years. Boosted by the success of a recent television adaptation, the classic tearjerker is given the remake treatment with Chen Kun Hou (Osmanthus Alley) at the helm, who has come out of retirement for this project because he is so moved by its inspirational theme. The veteran filmmaker directs a cast that includes Chen Zhi Kai (Corner with Love), Jade Chou (Bear Hug), and 11-year-old child actor Wu Chun Kai.
Like the original film and novel, the 2009 film tells the poignant story of a misunderstood genius. Ming (Wu Chun Kai) is a poor grade schoolboy gifted in drawing. However, the adults neglect his talent because "drawing is just a pastime for rich people". Only one person sees Ming as what he truly is - the young arts teacher (Chen Zhi Kai) nurtures the child prodigy and encourages him to submit his work to an international competition, and he does. But as soon as the boy gets his due recognition, tragedy strikes....
