Prolific director Chor Yuen returns to his earlier classic Intimate Confessions of a Chinese Courtesan for the 1984 remake Lust For Love Of A Chinese Courtesan! Newcomer Nancy Wu takes the role essayed by Lily Ho in the original. She's Ai Nu, a poor girl forced into prostitution by the conniving Lady Chun (Candice Yu, taking on Betty Pei's role in the original). Ai Nu is at first dismayed by her plight, but she slowly begins to understand the power and influence her sexual charms yield. Lady Chun takes the young girl under her wing, and even begins to fall for her. Meanwhile, Ai Nu slowly gains the upper hand on her captor, and begins to find a new desire...for revenge! Alex Man co-stars as a rare honest constable, who's investigating a murder at the brothel and finds himself attracted to the bewitching Ai Nu. Full of sex, sordid happenings, and even some martial arts action, Lust For Love Of A Chinese Courtesan is deliciously trashy and undeniably entertaining!

Bland remake

I don't see the point in this remake as both Yu An An and Nancy Hu do not have half the charisma and character of Betty Pei Tih and Lily Ho in the original. Clearly by 1984, director Chu Yuan had lost his touch. His ideas of new wave wu xia are ridiculously modern sets and contemporary-looking lingerie for the 2 girls? There are no solid production values here and the plot is almost non-existent. Why cast these 2 girls in an exploitation movie like this one if both are unwilling to bare? To make it worse, they have no acting skills to fall back on. So this movie is bland and very boring. It is a waste of Celestial's resources to remaster such a movie when there are so many treasures left in the vault. |
