Ashes Of Time
October 9, 2005 follow-up to my reviewI checked, and there is an R1 version of this film available, but at this time, I do not know how the quality compares with the MeiAh version.

On the Mountain of Tai Hang (DVD) (China Version)

October 9, 2005 A bit propaganda-ishThis is 'almost' epic status. I was interested in this obvious one-sided view of the sino-chinese war, but ultimately came away feeling a bit unmoved. The performances were good, the subs were very nice, the orchestration bordered a bit on the bombastic side, and a lot of the action scenes, are those hyper-edited ordeals, where you really cant make out whats going on. But, some of the action sequences were quite astounding, (especially the airport raid!). But, on the whole, it just didnt 'move' me, or 'involve' me in the story. I will certainly view it again, and for the price, its really worth adding to your collection. I just think the direction was a bit lacking, and the music got so patriotically overbearing, it almost became annoying at times. The Japanese take some hard-hitting verbal abuse as well in this film. I found that, a bit 'below the belt'. All in all, an almost epic film, that left me strangely cold.

Ashes Of Time
October 9, 2005 Quentin! Remaster this Classic! If there ever was a film that needed some remastering and care, it is this one. Although this MeiAh version, is not as horrid as the World Film version, it has its big share of faults. The film is very grainy, the sound is shrill, and both chinese and english subtitles appear on screen together, (the chinese subs above the english subs), and there is nothing you can do about it. This is one of the so-called first 'art-films', and I think it is worth remastering. Tarantino brought over a very nice transfer of 'Chungking Express', on his 'Rolling Thunder Presents' video company label. Let us hope he, or someone else, will remaster this great classic, so we can marvel at it, without all these distractions. 8 stars for the film. 4 stars for this version.

The Heroic Trio
September 26, 2005 Cult StatusThis film is entertaining, grotesque, funny, revolting, and camp. It must be a Johhnie To film! The idea of such talented actresses playing super-heroines is cool. The action scenes are well done, and it will certainly keep you entertained. But, for some, the over-the-top violence may turn some people off. And the things that happen to babies, will make you turn your head away from the screen! But, if taken as a tongue-in-cheek, campy action-adventure film, its one of the better ones. The sound is only in mono, but the subs are well-done. Enjoy! And cringe at the same time...

Executioners
September 26, 2005 Sequels usually suckIm a great fan of Johnnie To. But 'Executioners', was an obvious, and hasty attempt, to cash-in on the success of the more entertaining and polished 'Heroic Trio'. The story line here is a mess, the subtitles are 'Engrish', the sound is mono, and I think it wastes the talents of a lot of great actors. This is one Johnnie To film, you can execute.

Running on Karma (DTS Version) (US Version)
September 26, 2005 Left of CenterI love Johnnie To films! Theyre quirky, violent, funny, and sometimes inexplicable. 'Running on Karma', is definately one of his quirkiest. Its like he is screaming to the world, 'This is NOT a ganster movie!' Its one he did for the Box Office, instead of himself. I dont think its my favorite Johnnie To film, but it will certainly entertain you for 2 hours! Spot on subs, and DTS surround, add to the enjoyment. And, where else can you see Andy Lau running around naked in a latex muscle suit? In a Johnnie To Film, of course.

September 26, 2005 Andy WOW!
Being a fan of Anday Lau's films, but not knowing anything about his music, I took a chance and bought this new cd. What a surprise! This guy can croon some 'soulful pop tunes', with the best of them! Beautiful, contemporary arrangements and production. You dont even have to understand Mandarin. The voice and emotion go straight to the heart. (#3 is my favorite). Nice oversized packaging includes: lyric sheet, booklet, postcards and more. Now, Im begining to understand why he is so honored and respected. He can do it all. And does it extremely well. 'Add to Cart' now.

Attack The Gas Station! (Hong Kong Version)
March 2, 2005 What's so funny?I did not find this movie very amusing. First of all, its hard to gain attachment to any of the robbers, because their such jerks, the first 30 minutes in. After that, I found most of the sight gags pretty lame. I just dont think it works. This Full Screen version, was also a bit grainy on my 32". Nice try, but a failure.

Police Story
March 2, 2005 God Bless Jackie Chan!Enough folks have already commented on the extraordinary stunts in this movie. It is a 'must have', if youre a Jackie Chan fan. My only slightly negative comment about this version, is that the sound is a bit off sync. Something that others may not notice, but something that kinda irks me.
