Lavish huangmei classic

There have many film adaptations of the "Madam White Snake" legend, but none better than this lovely movie. Lin Dai was a perfect choice to play the title role; her beauty shines throughout. Indeed, the entire cast, including Tu Chuan as Lin Dai's heavenly sister, Chao Lei as Lin Dai's much-loved hubby, and veterans like Yu Kuan-Chao and Yang Chi-Ching in supporting roles, is just about perfect. I was particularly struck with the super-smooth lensing and editing of this film, a credit to the directorial genius of Yueh Feng. It looks great! And, of course, the lavish sets and sumptuous costuming are up to the usual fine Shaw Brothers' standards. I have downgraded the film a bit for its songs; I didn't find any of them to have particularly memorable melodies. The incidental music, on the other hand, is beautiful. It is the well-told familiar story that draws the viewer in and never lets our interest flag. "Madam White Snake" is highly recommended and will be enjoyed by a much wider audience than us hardcore huangmei opera fans. |

One of the best Huang-Mei classics not to be missed. Not only the songs are great, the performances of Lin Dai, Chao Lei and Tu Juan are also superb. Two thumps up! |
