YesAsia Editorial Description
Based on Takagi Nobuko's award-winning autobiographical novel, writer-director Katabuchi Sunao's Mai Mai Miracle explores an adolescent friendship that echoes the works of his mentor Miyazaki Hayao. Produced by animation studio MADHOUSE (Summer Wars, Paprika), Mai Mai Miracle eschews the studio's signature fantasy style for a sentimental drama that appeals to audiences of all ages with 50s nostalgia and visually lush images of the Japanese countryside. Despite having a weak opening at the box office, positive word-of-mouth managed to spread, leading to sold-out screenings in its limited Tokyo release. In the end, the film had a rare seven-month theatrical run around Japan and won recognition at the 2010 Media Arts Festival. In addition to local acclaim, Mai Mai Miracle was also nominated for Best Animated Film at the fourth Asia Pacific Screen Awards.
Set in the mid-1950s is Yamaguchi Prefecture, Mai Mai Miracle follows the adventures of Kiiko, who had just moved to the city of Hofu from Tokyo, and local girl Shinko. Living in a city filled with preserved historical monuments from the Heian period, Shinko likes to listen to stories from that period and imagine herself in them. Fascinated by Kiiko's Tokyoite ways, Shinko quickly makes friends with the new arrival, and the two get into various adventures involving a goldfish and a thousand-year-old legendary figure.

Product Information
At the same time, it was still a time when it was the "Good Old Days" with the Japanese way of respecting loyalty and compassion, caring for the neighbors, and enjoying nature were still present. The children of the town ran around energetically as the adults affectionately watched over them. The port town of Hofu in Yamaguchi Prefecture, provides the setting of this film, as a sprightly and vibrant story of a little girl's friendship, discoveries and growing-up, are subtly but powerfully portrayed through exquisite animation.
The story is based on the idiosyncratic autobiographical novel "Mai Mai Shinko," by Nobuko Takagi, winner of the prestigious literature award - Akutagawa Prize. Madhouse, one of Japan's foremost animation studios ("The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, "Paprika") put together her imaginative schoolgirl era with gifted director Sunao Katabuchi (acclaimed director of TV animation series "Black Lagoon", and assistant director of "Kiki's Delivery Serivce"), who studied under Hayao Miyazaki, into a beautiful and energetic animated film.
A heartwarming story that revolves around the friendship of a young girl is depicted in this animation that overflows with elements of fantasy.

A tender-hearted treat

While produced by the folks at MADHOUSE, "Mai Mai Miracle" has the look and feel of a Studio Ghibli film ... and that's a very good thing. The movie tells of the blossoming friendship between Shinko, a lively girl with an active imagination, and Kiiko, a quiet, lonely girl transplanted from Tokyo to rural Hofu. Shinko loves to listen to her grandfather speak of Hofu's glorious past and the two girls bond with each other while dreaming of a friendship with the governor's daughter of the long-ago Heian era. "Mai Mai Miracle" spins its delicate tale at a deliberate pace, weaving in themes of separation and loss. Small children may find the movie to be a bit slow and dark, but teens and adults will embrace the subtle charms of this character-driven little gem. Highly recommended. |
