本片是一齣以紀錄片手法拍攝的黑色喜劇,導演安德魯葛蘭是一名紐約的電影工作者,同時也是本片的主角,他出錢讓亞得利安與麗淇結婚,以交換拍攝全程的權利。
安德魯認為亞得利安是個理想的人選,這位皇后區的胖管理員已經放棄感情生活,並且願意迎娶外國新娘。亞得利安從一本型錄與幾位緬甸女人聯絡後,在廣告與信件的吸引下,看上二十幾歲的美女麗淇。電影公司出資讓麗淇搭機到美國,她立刻一頭栽進美國的婚姻生活,而婚姻在亞得利安的家中不過就是打掃煮飯。一開始,安德魯不去注意一個事實,亞得利安對待麗淇的態度就像佣人,而非伴侶。
後來,整個拍片計畫突然喊停,因為亞得利安沒有告知麗淇,就帶她到婦產科諮詢結紮手術。麗淇知道看醫生的原因後,拒絕接受手術。安德魯覺得亞得利安很過份,他們為此大吵一架,於是亞得利安退出紀錄片拍攝。兩個月後,麗淇突然跑去找安德魯,她給安德魯看了一支驚人的錄影帶,片中記錄她與亞得利安婚後的怪異生活。安德魯自覺對麗淇愈來愈絕望的生活有責任,於是鼓勵...。
