東欧系移民が多くを占めるペンシルバニア州ブラウンズビルの町に、太平洋戦争から帰還したイバン・ビビッチ（Ｊ・サヴェージ）が戻ってきた。歓迎式典で出迎える町の人々や父（Ｒ・ミッチャム）。イバンは幼なじみのマリア（Ｎ・キンスキー）の事を片時も忘れた事はなかった。思い出の野原で、戦争前に埋めたイヤリングを掘り出すイバン。マリアはイバンとの結婚を決意する。初めての夜、幸せの絶頂であるはずのイバンだったが、どうしてもマリアを抱くことができない。捕虜収容所での過酷な体験が、マリアだけを思う事でようやく繋ぎとめた彼の精神を引き裂いていたのだ。愛し合いながらも傷つけ合い、二人の生活は極限的な状況に追い込まれる。傷心のマリアを誘惑する流れ者のギター引きクラレンス（Ｋ・キャラダイン）、他の町に姿を消し投げやりに日々を過ごすイバン。静かに見守るイバンの父。しかし、時が過ぎても二人の愛はその炎を絶やすことはなかった。
