Director Itami Juzo's "A Taxing Woman" is an almost perfect social satire, a film that manages to treat its subjects with respect even as it pokes bitter fun at them. The "taxing woman" is Itakura Ryoko (played by the brilliant Miyamoto Nobuko, Itami's wife in real life), an exceptionally diligent and hard-working tax inspector for the Japanese government. The film follows her unremitting efforts to uncover the hidden income of business tycoon Gondo Hideki (Yamazaki Tsutomu). As we follow Ryoko's tireless sleuthing, the film unveils a soiled underworld of "love hotels", pachinko parlors, spoiled wives, mistresses, yakuza bosses, corrupt politicians, spineless tax accountants, and endless schemes to hide profits. But what sets this film apart is the way in which it humanizes its grubby milieu. For example, we see that Gondo truly is concerned about the path his son is taking in life; Ryoko, a single mom, bonds with him in caring about the boy. This fast-paced and elaborately plotted film features brilliantly quirky soundtrack music and a gritty look and feel perfectly suited to its comic subject. Your humble reviewer recommends "A Taxing Woman" very, very highly. |
