YesAsia Editorial Description

Lives and love intersect in Hong Kong's urban bustle in the 1992 romance Mary From Beijing written and directed by Sylvia Chang (20, 30, 40) and produced by Zhang Yimou. Acclaimed actress Gong Li (Curse of the Golden Flower) stars as the titular heroine, a Mainland Chinese woman trying to find her way in Hong Kong, while Kenny Bee steps in as the staple romantic leading man, a businessman who just returned from Britain. Sylvia Chang brilliantly captures the pre-1997 transient mood of Hong Kong, bringing disparate lives to identical crossroads for a light and affecting love story. Mary From Beijing is also beautiful to look at with cinematography from Christopher Doyle and art direction from William Chang Suk Ping.

Mary (Gong Li) was born in Hong Kong, but moved to Beijing with her parents as a child. After graduating from college, Mary decides to return to Hong Kong to start a new page in her life. She believes she's found true love when she meets wealthy jeweler's son Peter, but he insists on keeping their relationship a secret because of their background differences, leaving Mary's romance and residency in a state of uncertainty. She finds a sympathetic ear in new neighbor Ken (Kenny Bee), who is juggling some issues of his own having recently gotten divorced. Bonding over their troubles, Mary and Ken set out on a new path together - but is it one of romance or independence?

Captivating Sylvia Chang film Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
I don't believe that "Mary From Beijing" was embraced by critics when it was released. Perhaps, as the film was produced by Zhang Yimou, lensed by cinematographer Christopher Doyle, and starred Zhang's muse Gong Li, critics expected something like a moody Zhang Yimou film. But this is a Sylvia Chang movie and it offers rewards all its own. Gong Li plays Ma Li, a young woman from mainland China who realizes that her handsome, wealthy boyfriend (Wilson Lam) has no intention of ever marrying her, but just wishes to keep her as one more beautiful bauble in his life. Ma Li wishes to part from her boyfriend and pursue her own independent life, but is trapped in her loveless relationship by her lack of a residency card.

Enter Ken (Kenny Bee), an entrepreneur who has returned to Hong Kong from the U.K. because he feels compelled by patriotic fervor to start a business in China. His career move comes with a big personal cost; his wife decides to divorce him rather than to leave the U.K. Ken moves into an apartment across the hall from Ma Li and soon their lives begin to intertwine.

The downside of "Mary From Beijing" is that the stakes for its characters are not very high; the consequences if Ma Li and Ken fail to hit it off are not particularly great. Life will go on for both of them. The upside of the film that it delivers an honestly written, smoothly directed, attractively shot movie with characters about whom we care. Gong Li is terrific, giving a warm, believable, naturally sexy performance; Kenny Bee nicely complements her as the good-hearted, noble businessman. And Sylvia Chang brilliantly captures that fleeting post-Tiananmen, pre-1997 moment in both Hong Kong and the mainland, a moment that married giddy energy to wariness of the future. I highly recommend this film.
