Since its premiere in 1971, Ishinomori Shotaro's Masked Rider has become one of the most successful superhero franchises to emerge from Japan. The story takes place in a violent world terrorized by Shocker, an evil organization hell-bent on seizing control of the planet. Shocker kidnaps its new members and genetically transforms them into lethal cyborg warriors. One such victim, Hongo Takeshi is rescued before this process can be completed, and turns his newly acquired powers of strength and speed against his creators. Assuming the identity of grasshopper-like cyborg superhero Masked Rider, he now leads the campaign to restore peace to the Earth.
