wHAT A COMBO - part 2
| Correction to the above review afterthought - It's Tai Seng Video, not Ocean Shores. Score reading 3*** for He Has Nothing ..... and 2** for Shaolin Drunken....(only Gordon deserves it). |

What a combo

(***)He Has Nothing But KF -One of those early budget productions out of Shaw Bros by the Lau clan. A couple of the regulars are there like Wang Yu, Lee Hoi San and a handful of stuntguys including Mars. Gordon portrayed the son of an Admiral investigating corruption and crime in a small town and during one of these independent stints, was ambushed and left for dead when he fell over the cliff. Suffering temporary amnesia, he stumbled into town and befriended Wang Yu who is a trickster, albeit with no malice. Wang used Gordon's kungfu skills to help him recover his winnings at the local gambling den run by hoodlums with backing from corrupt officials and the 2 somehow got involved deeper and eventually when Gordon regained his memory after another knock to the head, they both put the corrupt officials behind bars. Still good fight choreography and wish Gordon would display more of his acrobatic abilities. Bad point - terrible dubbing with cowboy slang and music. (**)Shaolin Drunken Monk - I think this movie was made a few years later because you can see the maturity in Gordon, hotter body. According to the commentary, Gordon displayed the true style of drunken fist which he practised under the waterfall. Could it be released around the time of Jackie Chan's Drunken Master? Some training scenes do not match up, example in the kitchen and there's no related bits as to why he was cooking rice enough to feed 50 people! The script wasn't too bad but where do they find these other actors. As if the dubbing isn't bad enough, I think the makeup artist played a joke on them. None of the Lau clan regulars at all in this movie. If they did, it would have turned up better as the fighting choreography wasn't too bad. One last mention, this is the only wuxia movie where Gordon kissed a girl and this same girl who declared her love for him and said he's more important to her than her father (who also happened to be the killer of Gordon's family) and then stabbed herself because she can't bear the death of her father by Gordon's hands. What a mix=up!! Can't locate any of these 2 in cantonese dialogue, not even in vcds!! Desperado have no choice. I wish Celestial or Dragon Dynasty would remaster Gordon's movies from Ocean Shores. At this stage of technology, Ocean Shores's products are far below par. |
