Much more than a monster movie

In "Matango", a young tycoon named Kasai (Tsuchiya Yoshio), takes his main squeeze Mami (Mizuno Kumi) and his pals Prof. Murai (Kubo Akira) and the writer Yoshida (Tachikawa Hiroshi) out on a cruise in his fabulously expensive new pleasure boat. Prof. Murai brings cute coed Akiko (Yashiro Miki) along for the ride. Soon they find themselves buffeted by an unexpected storm, a storm that skipper Sakuta (Koizumi Hiroshi) and his first mate Koyama (Sahara Kenji) are unable to weather and the boat consequently ends up shipwrecked on an uncharted (and very foggy) island. On the island, this motley crew searches for food, but comes up with very little. They eventually stumble upon a much larger ship that has washed ashore, but its crew are nowhere to be found. The most enticing source of food on the island appear to be some juicy-looking mushrooms, but the professor fears that eating them might bring dire consequences. As their meager food supply runs out, can this mismatched assortment of people get along and resist the temptation to eat this forbidden fungus? While "Matango" is marketed as a monster movie (and monsters do show up in the film's final reel), the film primarily is an intense drama of how these people respond under the stresses and strains of being stuck on this remote island with limited food resources and no ready means of escape. Director Honda Inoshiro skillfully navigates the darkness that lies in men's hearts as well as the altruism that gives them hope. With death staring them in the face, will they submit to the darkness or struggle for freedom? This well-crafted and finely acted film is highly recommended. |

matango attack

This film is one of the most incredible film that i have ever seen.. and this is obviusly because the director... is the creator of the mitic monster godzilla... yes yes.. this film has all that you will wish...action..horror..comedy.. for me is one the best japan callssic horror movie... i saw this fil in a terror film festival.. and i think that is a great film... |
