August 7, 2010 White Tofu, Vegetable Tooth, & Pig Lady Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This version is dual audio with Cantonese and Mandarin and English subtitles. The Cantonese dub is great. The English subtitles however are very questionable and are really meant to supplement somebody that understands some of the spoken dialogue already. If you want better English subtitles, I recommend you search the internet for the fan subbed versions which are far superior. The special effects are not Hollywood quality, but once you get past that it has its own charm. The idea of reincarnation and multiple lives is a little confusing but treat this story as a fairy tale. The leading men do a stand up job and you'll have a new appreciation for the Chinese peace sign of 2 fingers once the series is over. Yang Mi is mischievously cute and Tiffany Tang is breathtakingly beautiful. The story starts out very light hearted but there are elements to the ending that you will find bittersweet.

  • May 21, 2009 New perspective on old characters Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I will always compare this series with the original 80s TVB version with Felix Wong and Barbara Yung. What I did find very interesting about this new update was how certain characters were given more attention. Particularly Ouyang Ke (歐陽克) as you can see that he wasn't an evil person. If you watch it all the way to the end, without major spoilers, if you already know the main story and were expecting something to happen...it doesn't. If you like seeing Ariel Lin and Hu Ge together, then I also recommend also watching The Little Fairy aka: Fairy From The Wonderland (天外飛仙) as they are also the two leading characters. The martial arts and fighting are good though i liked the recent Return of Condor Heroes more. Also there is more "babe" factor with the actresses in other recent releases of this genre. Overall though, I still recommend this to add to your watch list if you are a Jin Yong and Wuxia fan.

  • May 21, 2009 The prequel to Royal Tramp (AKA Duke of Mt Deer) Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
This may not have been meant as a prequel to Royal Tramp, however some of the same characters do find their way from this story into that story so if you are a Jin Yong fan and loved Royal Tramp then watch it. You won't regret it. All the female leads are beautiful and elegant. The martial arts are very relevant and clearly front and center throughout the whole story. I bought this from Yesasia and this version had both Cantonese and Mandarin with Chinese and English subtitles. Very well worth the purchase.

January 28, 2009 The end all be all definition of masterpiece wuxia Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Old fashion by modern standards, this is the version of ROCH that all future versions are compared to. Story telling, real martial arts and talented acting had to make up for the lack of action and special effects back in the early 80s. I would give this story 11 out of 10 stars if I could. The story is a masterpiece greater than Shakespeare literature, and is part of a trilogy that is to Asians, as Star Wars is to Western culture. This DVD set has perfect english subtitles, and completely tells the story of all the secondary characters far better than the modern releases. This is also as close to uncut as possible as previous VCD releases of this series cut scenes. This was the breakout series that started Andy Lau in his career and he is the heart and soul of this production. A love story that shows that it is easy to die for the one you love, but it's even harder to live for the one you love. Every fan of good wuxia should own this!

December 22, 2008 A tale of love, loyalty, and the search for truth Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I heard that the story was based on an RPG video game, but i never played it so i had no idea about the plot. The story starts out slow and if you you are looking for good fight scenes, you'll be disappointed. The fight scenes do come off very B rate and cheesy. However, once you get past that, you learn that this story is one massive drama and that the slow pace to the story helps develop all the characters. The lines and the message that are delivered are very profound. I love buying these DVD sets because it has dual audio for both Cantonese and Mandarin, and barring some very few minor typos, the English subtitles for this series are really good though you'll have to get use to the main character referred as "Freeman". Crystal Liu Yifei is once again beautiful, however the whole cast do a very good job of bringing you into their world. Definitely worth the watch, though be warned that if you watch it all the way to the end, you will desire an alternate ending.

  • December 1, 2008 You'll wish you had 7 wives too at the end Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
The look, settings, costumes, and acting of all the characters are top notch and all the wives are especially beautiful. I was concerned that Huang Xiao Ming was Yang Guo in the Condor Heroes and Wei Xiao Bao is a drastically different character but he pulls it off. You'll find that he is not an innocent Wei Xiao Bao, but portrays the character as more sinister than the 1984 depiction. I also get the suspicion that there are a few scenes cut, especially the ones involving him and his wives. This is still a good series to buy, especially since it comes in Cantonese however there are a few things about this DVD that annoy me. The subtitles are really questionable at some points as you'll feel that they just ran the Chinese through babelfish. The other thing is that in between episodes there are commercials for other movies which you can't really skip, just fast forward. I also wish there was a version of the end credits that didn't have the annoying advertisement as well.

November 18, 2008 Crystal Liu Yifei is a beautiful Dragon Girl Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Be careful as other versions of this DVD boxset that are cheaper actually has scenes cut! The more expensive version put out by Tai Seng will have a different cover art that says UNCUT version. This new version has spectacular scenery, costumes, and fight scenes. The character development and dialogue however was better in the 83 version so it's recommended to watch that to understand the backgrounds and full stories of some of the minor characters. The highlight to this movie without a doubt is Liu Yifei. She is absolutely stunning as Dragon Girl. I find myself fast forwarding fight scenes just to see more of her and Yang Guo. All the scenes with them together are extremely dramatic, almost to the point of making you cry. You'll recognize alot of the music from this series from Inuyasha and other soundtracks. The english subs are pretty decent too. The one biggest disappointment will come all the way at the ending as you'll find it ends very abruptly but other than that, definitely worth the purchase to own this version of part 2 of the Condor Heroes Trilogy.
