    My Life as McDull (2001)
Hong Kong's favorite homegrown cartoon/comic character McDull made the leap to the silver screen in director Toe Yuen's 2001 theatrical version My Life as McDull. The brainchild of writer Brian Tse and cartoonist Alice Mak, the little piglet born in a grass root family endears himself to readers and audiences with his cute look and good-natured character. There's more to McDull's charm, as the humorous stories, witty dialogs, and references to the life, culture, and familiar settings in Hong Kong, mean that even adults can find much to enjoy in this franchise. With stars Jan Lamb, Sandra Ng, and Anthony Wong lending their voices, McDull's biography, his dreams, and his world are vividly brought to life in this animated film, which has won numerous accolades from Hong Kong Film Awards, Golden Horse Awards, and other notable film awards around the world.

McDull, Prince de la Bun (2004)
The second McDull movie after My Life as McDull, McDull, Prince de la Bun is a satirical allegory of life and change in Hong Kong society. Travelling back to Hong Kong in the 1960s, the animation provides photo-realistic drawings to depict an old Hong Kong that has since faded away. The film is voiced by some wonderful talent, including Andy Lau, Anthony Wong, and Sandra Ng.

McDull Kung Fu Ding Ding Dong (2009)
The third animated McDull film, McDull Kung Fu Ding Ding Dong makes the sojourn to China where things are much different and yet the same for young McDull, now a bumbling martial arts apprentice. Directed by Brian Tse, who wrote and produced the previous two features, the film again champions the bittersweet sentiments and humorous mix of juvenile jokes and spot-on satire that have endeared McDull to not only children but also adults. Running out of ideas in Hong Kong, Mrs. Mak decides to try her luck in China. She leaves McDull at a martial arts boarding school on the famous Mt. Wudang, where he makes new friends, gets in trouble, and learns Tai Chi very very slowly.

Professional Review of "McDull Blu-ray Complete Boxset (English Subtitled) (Hong Kong Version)"

    December 18, 2002

This professional review refers to My Life as McDull (Movie Version)

Animation production is never a popular business in Hong Kong. Back in the 1980s, three Old Master Q were produced, which did not gain too much attention from the public. In the mid 1990s, Tsui Hark produced an animated feature A Chinese Ghost Story. It was pretty well received, but still unable to stimulate the growth of the animation industry drastically. In 2001, Brian Tse animated his highly successful comic series The Story of McMug and released My Life as McDull.

This film does not have a very strong narrative structure. As the title suggests, it is mainly about the life of the protagonist, a little piggie called McDull. The film is like a rough autobiography of this character. It begins with the birth of McDull and ends when McDull finally becomes an adult.

Before you compare this film with any Hayao Miyazaki or Disney animated productions and severely criticize the quality of the animation, I want to disclose some factual information I got about this film. The entire crew involved in this animation consists of about twelve persons only (yes! No more no less), and most of them are not veteran animators. The budget is very tight. Now you know why it is meaningless to do such a comparison. It is already a miracle that they were able to finish the film properly and release it. Having said that, I actually thought the quality of the animation is not that bad. The combination of 2D characters with the 3D settings fits well together, it inherits the style of the comic appropriately. One of the most successful elements of the comic version is its originality, by that I mean the drawing style and the narrative. In this regard, the animated feature does capture its spirit outstandingly. The setting is not any imaginary world, it is a very concrete and realistic portrayal of Hong Kong.

Many people think My Life as McDull is for kids only, I seriously doubt that. McDull and his friends are cute and their encounters are funny, but it is not all. If you take a closer look, you will notice that McDull's life is in fact a big failure. The producer of this film Brian Tse has a much higher ambition. The metaphorical message behind the story is heavier and more profound than we expected. Although the encounters of the characters seem to be banal (and little traumatic), the implication behind is quite clear - There is no dream at all, in order to survive in this harshly world, you either conform to it or become an outcast. It is really a very sarcastic remark. Animation is usually made for kids to satisfy their fantasy and dreams, but this film is totally a deviation. Instead of promoting dreams, it suggests to people that fantasy does not exist. In the end, the transformation of McDull from a cartoon character to a human being affirms this theme. There is no way for McDull to survive in an imaginary world, the only means for him to get through is to transform himself into a real human being in a realistic world.

The dubbing is very nice. What is good about it is that the producer is able to recruit a kid to dub McDull's voice. The tone or the pitch of a kid is very different from that of an adult, no matter how hard one tries to imitate, it is almost impossible to recreate that natural innocence of kids' voice. Anthony Wong's talent for dubbing is also demonstrated in this film.

Apparently, the development of animation production in Hong Kong is still immature. My Life as McDull needs refinement for sure. It is not too long (only about 70 minutes) and it has a loosely edited narrative structure. Nevertheless, it is still a big achievement in Hong Kong animation history. Now I am eagerly waiting for more animations coming out from Hong Kong in the future.

    Cool guy(s) - Anthony Wong

Enchanting animated tale Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
"My Life as McDull" is one of the funniest, most heart-breaking, and most heart-warming animated films I've ever seen. Not particularly bright, not particularly handsome, and not particularly lucky, McDull is your average, everyday Hong Kong kid (or, in this case, piglet). He loves his mom, loves his school, and loves his school friends, although he sometimes struggles with all of the above. He wants to make his mark on the world, but, given his lack of special talents, it is not clear how he can make it happen. And he dreams of traveling to the Maldives, but his mother has no money for such a trip. Somehow, out of these unprepossessing circumstances, the filmmakers craft a loose-limbed tale filled with laughter, optimism, and genuine affection.

The film's animation is superficially crude, but its imagery and effects create a fully-realized world. Indeed, that world -- the city and culture of Hong Kong -- is captured so vividly and exquisitely that it becomes almost a character of its own in the movie's tale. The film's story is told in anything but a linear fashion; it goes off on tangents and flights of fancy that can seem baffling at first, but which add wealth of richness to the characters and the setting.

While "My Life as McDull" certainly will appeal to children, I don't regard it as truly a children's movie. Lots of the story will go way over the heads of small children, but will leave adults in stitches (and, in some cases, in tears). In short, this is a movie that will appeal to viewers of all ages. "My Life as McDull" is a delight!

wonderful movie Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
i loved this movie! my first impression was that it was a cute children's movie about being a kid with an overbearing mother. but as the movie progressed it seem to reflect on many aspects of life. like realizing dreams don't always come true and that there are disappointments in life even when you're a kid. also it's the little things in life that you appreciate the most. overall i reccomend this movie to all ages. kids will love to watch it because it's funny and cute and adults will enjoy it too because it has a deeper meaning.

Mc Dull is a cute funny determined little pig and is just an unique little kid in his class. It's so cute how he tries to please his mom. It's just so funny that McDull likes Chicken Bottoms because no one really eats that part but it is a very funny thing. (Not to BE personal) I almost choked from laughing soo much, While I was eating chicken!!(how ironic) I just love the little guy and I can't wait for Prince De La Bun!!
