時は１８９４年。夫に先立たれたユン氏夫人は、伝統あるチェ参判宅を守っていた。チェ家のひとり息子チスと愛のない結婚をしたビョルタンは、下人として入ったクチョンと愛し合い、幼い娘ソヒを置いて駆け落ちする。その後、クチョンの正体が、ユン氏夫人が手篭めにされて出来た息子キム・ファンだとわかり、チスは異母弟に妻を奪われたことに激怒。そんな時、没落した両班のピョンサンがチスを罠にかけて殺害してしまう。数日後、ユン氏夫人もコレラで他界し、肉親を亡くしたソヒは、下人のギルサンに見守られて成長する。チェ家を守ることを使命に生きるソヒだが、親戚のジュングの策略で土地の権利書を奪われてしまう。いつかジュングに復讐し、土地を取り返すと固い決意を胸に故郷を離れたソヒは、日本との親密な関係を築き、富と名誉を手に入れてギルサンと結婚する。そして、物語は甲午農民戦争、甲午改革、乙未事変などの韓国近代史を背景にして進行し、１９４５年、ソヒはようやく再び故郷の土地を踏む。
