物語の舞台は、もちろんニューヨーク。ヒロインのメリンダは、医者の夫と別れ、この街へやって来た。彼女がアパートのドアを開け、パーティの輪に入ったところから、ふたつのストーリーが展開していく……ひとりのメリンダは、パーティーの主催者ローレルの学生時代の親友。不倫をしたあげく、自殺未遂を図ったというメリンダは、ローレルの家にしばらく同居することに。あるパーティで、メリンダはエリスというピアニストに出会う。すっかり彼に惹かれてしまったメリンダだったが……もうひとりのメリンダは睡眠薬を飲みすぎてしまい、同じアパートのホビー夫妻の部屋へ転がりこむ。ホビーはそんなメリンダと競馬場に出かけたりして友人関係を持つうちに、いつしか彼女が気になる存在となってしまっていた。一方でホビーの妻は、メリンダに独身の歯科医を紹介しようと動き出すのだが……
