YesAsia Editorial Description

Arthur Golden's blockbuster bestseller, MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA, has been brilliantly brought to the big screen by Oscar-nominated director Rob Marshall (CHICAGO). The film opens in a remote Japanese fishing village in 1929, where two sisters, Chiyo and Satsu, are sold by their troubled father to people who place Chiyo in a classy geisha house known as an okiya in Gion and Satsu in a much more vulgar and dangerous district. Chiyo becomes a maid to Hatsumomo, a cold, controlling, and calculating geisha who is instantly jealous of Chiyo's unusual, beautiful eyes and childish innocence. Chiyo is befriended by Pumpkin, another maid at the okiya, but the two are soon driven apart. Chiyo is shown compassion by the Chairman and another, more successful geisha, Mameha, who takes her under her wing as her "little sister," furthering the battle between Chiyo, now called Sayuri, and Hatsumomo. As Sayuri is trained in the art of being a geisha, learning how to walk, talk, dance, and serve (up to a point) in order to please and honor her distinguished male clients, World War II looms on the horizon, threatening to upend Japan and its old ways. MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA is a lush, sweeping historical and romantic epic, featuring gorgeous period costumes, primarily the exquisite kimono worn by the geisha. Ziyi Zhang (HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS) is outstanding as Sayuri, who stands up to the oppressive Hatsumomo (the effervescent Gong Li), while Michelle Yeoh, who starred with Zhang in CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON, is splendid as the wise and elegant Mameha. Ken Watanabe (THE LAST SAMURAI), Koji Yakusho (SHALL WE DANCE?), and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa (ELEKTRA) are among the men who take an interest in Sayuri, who is continually faced with difficult choices that will shape her destiny, just as Japan's destiny is changing shape with the coming of the West. John Williams's soaring score is enhanced by solos from virtuosos Yo-Yo Ma and Itzhak Perlman.

3 stars out of 5 -- "Zhang is loveliness incarnate. And the great Michelle Yeoh, her co-star in CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON, possesses a touching gravity..." - Peter, Travers (Rolling Stone Critic), Rolling Stone, 12/15/2005

"The exquisite Ms. Gong looks like a gift that keeps on giving when trussed up in silk, but she and the film come most alive when her hair tumbles down and she sashays about the okiya, stirring the air with her tremulous rage." - Manohla, Dargis (Film Critic), New York Times, 12/09/2005

"As beautiful-looking a film as you'll see....Often magical." - Chris, Roberts (Uncut Critic), Uncut, 02/01/2006

"On the evidence of Marshall's film, the geishas are like highly trained birds kept in intricately woven bamboo cages; they are made temporarily fascinating by the skills of the film's true artists -- its troika of fine leading actresses..." - Leslie, Felperin (Film Critic), Sight and Sound, 02/01/2006

"Dion Beebe's gorgeous cinematography is delivered with sharp images..." - Suzanne, Hodges (Widescreen Review Critic), Widescreen Review, 04/01/2006

an AWESON MUST WATCH FILM! Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
this film has everything! its so artistic, and simply just a beautiful film! i enjoyed watching it from beginning to end, the plot flows smooothly and has a lot of unexpected twist esp at the end! but the only thing i ddint like about this film is the cast, the man that michelle liked is kinda too old, old enough to be his dad! like he's prolly at least in his mid 40's.lol

Not at good as the Book! Customer Review Rated Bad 4 - 4 out of 10
I read the book first then watched the film - which is nowhere NEAR as good as the book! I guess that's always the case! I felt the movie was too rushed and if I hadn't read the book - then perhaps it would have been harder to keep up with the movie's momentum...
Their English was pretty difficult to understand...

Better than expected! Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Who would have thought that this movie can work? Chinese actors playing the lead Japanese roles in Kimonos speaking heavily-accented english? I personally thought that it wouldn't work. So I was pleasantly surprised when I finally saw the movie. It wasn't bad at all. In fact, it is one of the best Asian-themed movies of recent memory. Rob Marshall did a fabulous job! And so did Ziyi Zhang, Ken Watanabe and Michelle Yeoh. But for this movie, I would have to agree to many people that Gong Li did a superb job of portraying Hatsumoto, the lead Geisha of the Okiya. It is her best portrayal yet, and in English, too! So, if you gotta hate the movie, hate it. But please spare us who did like the movie. We already know about all the controversies, and at the end of the day, the fact is, it is a good film that certainly entertains. As for the DVD, it is a good thing that the film is released in a two-disc anamorphic widescreen edition, that will surely please fans.

Great Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
This movie was done beautifully. The only flaw that i think could of made it better was if they were speaking japanese and put english subtitles. To me that would make the movie..much better. Inmy opinion the movie is a little longer that it could of been but the people and places that are shown in the movie take your breath away. Its a good movie
Watch it ~

Re: The movie Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
I'm going to have this movie a high 8. I watched this film at the movie theatres. I found it very intriguing. I have to admit that I'm not a big fan of Zhang Ziyi; however, the movie itself was very moving. Each three chinese actresses were able to express and portray the characters that they were assigned. They were very captivating, which I thought that was very impressive. That's what I called, "acting." Although, their english was not to perfection (excluding Michelle Yeoh) but it was perfect for their role. I have not read the book and I know I will not the read book anytime soon. But I'm very sure that the movie have caught every movement, art, and characteristic of a geisha, especially memoir of a geisha.
