YesAsia Editorial Description
Zhang Ziyi, Gong Li, and Michelle Yeoh bring to life a legend about geishas, female Japanese artists who earn a living by entertaining guests through singing and dancing. The film showcases the most exotic side of Japanese culture through 200 fabulous kimonos (traditional Japanese clothing), a glamorous Geisha district re-constructed near Los Angeles, performance of Japanese dance and music, plus more. Japanese award-winning actors Watanabe Ken and Yakusho Koji star as influential Japanese men, one admired by Sayuri and the other admiring her.
Adapted from Arthur Golden's same titled novel, the movie starts with a little girl Chiyo being sold by his penniless fisherman father to a geisha house. Top Geisha Hatsumomo (Gong Li) keeps making things difficult for Chiyo, but fate brings Chiyo to become Mameha's (Michelle Yeoh) apprentice and soon the most popular geisha named Sayuri (Zhang Ziyi). Sayuri knows too well that she should not love anyone, but she cannot suppress her feelings for the Chairman (Watanabe Ken), just as the Chairman's good friend (Yakusho Koji) cannot help falling for Sayuri. One the eve of World War II, will Sayuri be able to see her future with her unique watery blue eyes?

In the years before World War II, a Japanese child is torn from her penniless family to work as a geisha house. Despite a treacherous rival who nearly breaks her spirit, the girl blossoms into the legendary geisha Sayuri. Beautiful and accomplished, Sayuri captivates the most powerful men of her day, but is haunted by her secret love for the one man beyond her reach.

an AWESON MUST WATCH FILM!
| this film has everything! its so artistic, and simply just a beautiful film! i enjoyed watching it from beginning to end, the plot flows smooothly and has a lot of unexpected twist esp at the end! but the only thing i ddint like about this film is the cast, the man that michelle liked is kinda too old, old enough to be his dad! like he's prolly at least in his mid 40's.lol |

I read the book first then watched the film - which is nowhere NEAR as good as the book! I guess that's always the case! I felt the movie was too rushed and if I hadn't read the book - then perhaps it would have been harder to keep up with the movie's momentum... Their English was pretty difficult to understand... |

Better than expected!
| Who would have thought that this movie can work? Chinese actors playing the lead Japanese roles in Kimonos speaking heavily-accented english? I personally thought that it wouldn't work. So I was pleasantly surprised when I finally saw the movie. It wasn't bad at all. In fact, it is one of the best Asian-themed movies of recent memory. Rob Marshall did a fabulous job! And so did Ziyi Zhang, Ken Watanabe and Michelle Yeoh. But for this movie, I would have to agree to many people that Gong Li did a superb job of portraying Hatsumoto, the lead Geisha of the Okiya. It is her best portrayal yet, and in English, too! So, if you gotta hate the movie, hate it. But please spare us who did like the movie. We already know about all the controversies, and at the end of the day, the fact is, it is a good film that certainly entertains. As for the DVD, it is a good thing that the film is released in a two-disc anamorphic widescreen edition, that will surely please fans. |

This movie was done beautifully. The only flaw that i think could of made it better was if they were speaking japanese and put english subtitles. To me that would make the movie..much better. Inmy opinion the movie is a little longer that it could of been but the people and places that are shown in the movie take your breath away. Its a good movie Watch it ~ |

Re: The movie
| I'm going to have this movie a high 8. I watched this film at the movie theatres. I found it very intriguing. I have to admit that I'm not a big fan of Zhang Ziyi; however, the movie itself was very moving. Each three chinese actresses were able to express and portray the characters that they were assigned. They were very captivating, which I thought that was very impressive. That's what I called, "acting." Although, their english was not to perfection (excluding Michelle Yeoh) but it was perfect for their role. I have not read the book and I know I will not the read book anytime soon. But I'm very sure that the movie have caught every movement, art, and characteristic of a geisha, especially memoir of a geisha. |
