The way Kiyama Yusaku became a singer is one of legend. The Osaka native had longed for a professional singing career since he sang in a college band, but a lack of opportunity eventually steered him onto the path of a salaryman instead. The turning point came when he was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2004, and he knew that surgery could take away his voice forever. Kiyama vowed to pursue his dream again if he would recover. And he did. So, with the blessing of his wife and four children, he took part in a television singing contest and went on to win a record deal.
In February 2008, Kiyama released his first single home, and this 40-year-old J-pop freshman got to perform in NHK's Kouhaku Uta Gassen the same year. His 2009 debut album Memorial, written by famous composer Tago Kunio, includes the single home, the duet horori with Aizawa Kumiko, and the ending theme song "Forever" for TV anime Skipped Beat! for a total of 11 tracks.
