Metade Fumaca (Taiwan Version)

YesAsia Editorial Description

Popstar Nicholas Tse is Smokey, a low-level triad boy who's recruited by aging triad hitman Mountain Lion (Eric Tsang) to help him settle a score with longtime nemesis Nine Dragons (Chan Wai Man). Years earlier, Mountain Lion and Nine Dragons fought over the love of a mysterious girl (Shu Qi), and now Mountain Lion seeks revenge. He also wants to find the girl again, but he needs Smokey to guide him through the changed, almost ridiculously quirky Hong Kong underworld, which definitely isn't what Mountain Lion remembers!

At once quirky and affecting, Metade Fumaca fuses the existential musings of Wong Kar Wai with a flashy triad underworld more akin to the Young and Dangerous films. Directed with style and wit by Riley Yip, the film packs delicious punch, and features standout performances from Eric Tsang and Nicholas Tse, who was nominated for Best Actor at the Taiwan Golden Horse Awards - a promising feat for such a young, relatively untrained actor. Cameos from Anthony Wong, Sandra Ng, Stephen Fung, Sam Lee, Terence Yin and Kelly Chen add to the familiar Hong Kong Cinema flavor, and the eclectic soundtrack and assured sense of style gives the film a cool, pop culture-driven vibe which never ceases to entertain.

Unusual, stylish "buddy" film Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"Metade Fumaca" is a stylish, watchable tale of a triad thug who returns to Hong Kong in search of his long-lost love after spending 30 years in exile in Brazil. In Portuguese, "metade fumaca" means half-smoked; for 30 years the thug has carried a half-smoked cigarette of his love interest.

Eric Tsang skillfully brings to life this bumbling, blowhard thug. Nicholas Tse is equally good as the young "righteous" street tough that Tsang enlists to help in his quest. Think of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza in search of the lovely Dulcinea; the Cervantes novel clearly is an inspiration for this film.

As the story unwinds, we follow Mr. Tse as he learns the truth about Tsang's mysterious character. Along the way we encounter out-of-control gang members, Sandra Ng's wonderful depiction of a mid-level gang boss, Kelly Chen as Nicholas Tse's own Dulcinea (and as Hong Kong's most glamorous street cop), Tse's mother pining for the man who impregnated her, Shu Qi's pouty lips, and a host of other colorful characters.

It doesn't all make sense, but enough of it does to make this an exciting and enjoyable ride. I can recommend "Metade Fumaca" for a general audience. (A minor footnote: This film may set a record for the most cigarettes smoked by cast members; I'm sure HK's health authorities would not have approved!)

one of Tsang's... Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
better films. He's always been a good 2ndary or thirdary character. But this film cleverly blends the young and old together in a fantastic/romantic story of the mind. I think it has more substance than alot of traditional hk flix which is onli a couple pretty faces trotting around with a thin story. im very happi with this buy to my collection. A definite reccomend!
