Hong Kong uber producer Johnny Mak scored his first success with his debut film Lonely Fifteen in 1982, which was a sizable hit at the box-office and a critical triumph with 7 nominations at the second Hong Kong Film Awards. Revolving around underage prostitutes, the film's realistic depiction of social problems became a staple of Mak's future films, including the next two chapters in the series, Everlasting Love (1984) and Midnight Girls (1986).

Returning to the director's chair after Lonely Fifteen, David Lai helmed the third film from a script by Mak and his creative partner Stephen Shiu. Midnight Girls stayed true to the principle of casting new faces in the lead roles, fielding novice actresses Kitty Chan and Ng Man Ling alongside acclaimed actor Francis Ng, who actually made his film debut here.

Rebellious girls Blackie (Kitty Chan) and Ling (Ng Man Ling) grew up together in the ghetto and both of them had a brief stint as club hostesses. The duo now attempt to put their past behind them by getting desk jobs in a business firm. But Blackie soon realizes that Ling moonlights in the nightclub again to satisfy her material needs. Meanwhile, Blackie manages to convince her boyfriend to marry her, but he backs out as soon as he finds out about her shameful past. When the girls' secret work history gets exposed in the office, they have no other choice but fall back onto their old path of selling their bodies...

Irene and Amy were both born in a poor family. Both in their early 20s, they can be described as rebels against society. They both had work in night club. For the moment, they are working in a reputable business firm. However, Irene does not like office work and she is tired of her boy friend Forman. So she takes on a part time job as night club hostess again, but keeps it a secret. Amy's boy friend reneges on his promise to marry her, giving her past as his pretext. And soon the office gets word the two girls have been midnight girls. Both have to resign and become night club hostesses......
