YesAsia Editorial Description
Miracle on 1st Street brings back the trio who made 2002 sex comedy Sex is Zero, one of the top 20 grossing Korean films of all time. Director Yoon Je Kyun comes back to directing after years as a producer. After founding Dusabu Films and focusing on his production company, Yoon decided it was time to try his luck once again, with his two friends from the past, Ha Ji Won and Lim Chang Jung, the stars of Sex is Zero. After quitting his music career in great fashion, Lim has become one of the few surefire box office draws in Korea, proving himself to be quite a fine comic actor as well. And Ha Ji Won continues with her endless transformations. After learning traditional dance and Geomungo for the historical drama Hwang Jin Yi, this time she went through boxing training for a couple of months to make her performance more realistic.

Miracle on 1st Street sees the return of director Yoon Je Gyun, previously responsible for the two Korean comedy blockbusters Sex is Zero and My Boss, My Hero. Sticking to what he knows best, he delivers another slice of wackiness, putting a farcical spin on the ever-topical subject of forced land reclamation. Returning to help him are Lim Chang Jung and Ha Ji Won, both of whom worked with him on Sex is Zero during the early years of their careers, and who have since gone on to become two of Korea's most popular performers. The film begins with useless lowlife gangster Pil Je (Lim Chang Jung, recently in My Lovely Week) being sent to the titular slum neighbourhood to clear out the remaining residents and make way for a modern apartment complex. He sets about his task by trying to intimidate people and force them to sign their houses away, but soon finds himself becoming involved with them, and in a supremely ironic, though not exactly unforeseen twist even starts helping to improve their lives. Of course, it helps that he catches the eye of troubled young female boxer Myeong Ran (Ha Ji Won, also in Duelist), and the two gradually form a relationship of sorts. Basic premise aside, Miracle on 1st Street is pretty much plotless, with Pil Je's land grabbing mission going out of the window after about ten minutes and being all but forgotten until the final act when other gangsters turn up, understandably annoyed at his complete lack of effort. As such, most of the proceedings are given over to his wholly predictable conversion from incompetent thug to unlikely saviour, and the film is probably best thought of as a piece of whimsical fantasy, painting the lives of the wacky but happy slum dwellers with a series of broad strokes. There is a definite air of familiarity throughout, with director Yoon cheerfully pilfering scenes from other films, in particular the boxing subplot, which appears to have been culled from the likes of Crying Fist and Champion. Where the film does work is in the details, mainly thanks to the fact that its characters are an interesting and likeable bunch, each with a clearly defined dream to chase and their own set of entertaining eccentricities. Although they are not particularly realistic (a case in point being Ha Ji Won's boxer, who never seems to suffer any facial injuries despite the poundings she takes in the ring, and who somehow manages to win herself a title fight despite being an amateur with no wins under her belt), their relationships with each other, and more importantly with Pil Je do develop in a believable and strangely affecting manner, and the viewer gradually gets drawn into their odd stories and romances. This helps to distract from the lack of an overall driving narrative, and keeps the film moving along and at an engagingly bouncy pace. It certainly helps that the film is consistently colourful and funny, with plenty of slapstick (i.e. people being smacked in the face and/or crotch) and mild, inoffensive toilet humour. Many of the gags are at Pil Je's expense, though thanks to a game performance from Lim Chang Jung, he makes for an amusingly idiotic protagonist who it is all too easy to laugh at. Unsurprisingly, the jokes later give way to shameless cheap sentiment and melodrama, though given the time invested in the characters, this development does not feel too forced, and even packs a certain emotional punch. What might not be expected is that the film also contains a number of genuinely harsh and depressing scenes, with a couple of poor children being mercilessly bullied, and with the sudden shift back into the real world at the end bringing a handful of brutally bloody beatings. This gives Miracle on 1st Street a slight, though important edge which helps to somewhat dilute its otherwise sugar sweet centre and to make it far more palatable than it might otherwise have been. Largely sailing by on the charm of its characters and wacky sense of humour, it delivers the goods for fans of the form, and may even bring a smile to the face of more cynical viewers, or at least to those willing to suspend disbelief for a couple of hours. by James Mudge - BeyondHollywood.com |

"Miracle on 1st Street" balances humor and drama to fashion a very engaging story. Lim Chang Jung stars as Pil Je, a punk sent by an unscrupulous real estate developer to force the impoverished residents of 1st Street to give up their shabby homes. Pil Je is happy to employ any means necessary, including threats and deceit, to get people to stamp the necessary paperwork. However, as Pil Je proceeds on his destructive path, the slumdwellers begin to have a humanizing effect on him. Pil Je's neighbor on 1st Street is Myeong Ran (Ha Ji Won), a menial laborer by day and aspiring boxer at night. Myeong Ran hopes to follow in her father's footsteps and become the Asian champion. Her father, unfortunately, suffered crippling brain injuries when, late in his career, he took on an opponent much quicker than him. Pil Je also befriends two small children living with their cancer-ridden grandfather. The kids are relentlessly teased and bullied by their better-off classmates. The occasional humorous bits and the realistic depictions of the plights of these poor people manage to prevent the film from sinking into bathos. Indeed, I was captivated by the lives of the folks on 1st Street. This is not a perfect movie -- the ending seems tacked on and Myeong Ran's boxing coach does something entirely out of character for a man who is supposed to be a Christian -- but these are minor quibbles for a film I found to be very richly entertaining. |

First of all, do not try to compare this movie with Sex is Zero. Watch this with an open mind. Here you will find a kind hearted gangster, a persistent boxer who tried to gain what her father had lost, the day to day lives of poor people in Seoul and a little boy who learns to fly. Watchable. Recommended to rent instead of buying. |

I love the pairing. This is tug and a love story with a slight drama and comedy at the same time. The tandem is the lead stars is something nice. They are together before in the movie "Wet Dreams 2". The story is something new for me and i like the ending. Pretty neat. Nice buy. |

At first, i didn't know what to expect from this movie based on the trailer as it seemed like a comedy. However, I thought the movie was very enjoyable. It has romance, comedy, sadness, and some boxing. The plot is nothing unique, but it was entertaining, especially the two young kids. I would recommend this movie. |

A bit more serious than SIZ
|
Although featuring Chang Jung Lim and Ji Won Ha and directed by Yun Je Gyun who were all involved in the movie "Sex is Zero", the main initial thing to mention here is that although SIZ [or should that be sizzle? ;) ] was a very humorous and irreverent sex comedy, this is so contrasting and a far more serious drama. It does have humorous moments, but the humor becomes blunted due to the circumstances of home evictions and poverty. For instance the local mischievous kid's who modify an outside toilet, that Chang Jung's character often has to use, brings a few mirth filled moments, but tearful children and hardships are the norm here. The residents of this film are on the outskirts of social norms and live rugged existences only to have to be thrown out of their homes by local 'business associates' who want all of the locals bottoms out of town, so as to build high rise blocks in their place. In fact there's a lot more pathos here than anything. I was quite surprised with "Miracle" in a way as I thought that Ji Won Ha's character, being a trained boxer, was going to portray a sort of local heroine and smack the pants off all the nasty thugs that are trying to evict the poor residents with a topical 'girl power' fighting finale to top it all off. You almost anticipate it. But this film isn't quite like that and although Ji Won whomps a few gangsters mid way through, her main ambition is to fight at an Asian Boxing Championship and vindicate her defeated and sadly vegetable stated boxing father and full fill her own dream of becoming a boxing champ (all revealed in the movies intro). Chang Jung as the gangster who needs signed agreements from all the locals, to get the land deeds for the high rise blocks built for his bosses, acts well as the wide boy gangster and also shows a soft heart later in as he eventually gels with two mischievous but decent local children. He eventually realizes that there is more to life than putting money objectives over the lives of innocent people. In many ways, Chang's gangster / kids camaraderie and involvement is more featured than Ji Won's boxer character in the scheme of things with the residents. In this sense the film is a tease and the ending a bit off kilter and overly sentimental - for me, anyway. So don't expect Ji Won to come all over 'sting like a butterfly, fly like a bee' and save the local yokels by kick boxing the gangsters into the dust and out of town. She does box, but not with them! A love romance, though, with a male coffee vending machine attendant and another girl who is also one of the to be evicted residents (soorrry - I cannot find you actors names here as I type) is well played out and these two characters form a good sub plot which is quite endearing and finishes off way better than the overall film's final message. It is all a reasonable feel good film, though, about fulfilling dreams even if the ending isn't what might be expected with Ji Won's anticipated heroics (not that it has to be that way). The acting is top of the class as to be expected. Ji Won is great and with her adoptive boxing skills she must have worked hard to preform as she does and these elements of her role are played well, but I hope to see her in something more character central next time. "Miracle on 1st Street" is one of those movies where I'm not sure, by a single viewing, how to totally rate it - its all worth seeing, but don't expect great things from it. Ji Won though, I've read is to appear with Cha Tae Hyun in a romantic drama called "Babo" made by director Jeong Gwan Kim who also made "Ditto" and that is one I'm interested in seeing. One last thing - with Ji Won's boxing talent, I think she should box the ears of those who left the English subtitles off her last TV series "Hwang Jin Yi" and gave it erratic region codes. Honestly! |
