YesAsia Editorial Description
Miracle on 1st Street brings back the trio who made 2002 sex comedy Sex is Zero, one of the top 20 grossing Korean films of all time. Director Yoon Je Kyun comes back to directing after years as a producer. After founding Dusabu Films and focusing on his production company, Yoon decided it was time to try his luck once again, with his two friends from the past, Ha Ji Won and Lim Chang Jung, the stars of Sex is Zero. After quitting his music career in great fashion, Lim has become one of the few surefire box office draws in Korea, proving himself to be quite a fine comic actor as well. And Ha Ji Won continues with her endless transformations. After learning traditional dance and Geomungo for the historical drama Hwang Jin Yi, this time she went through boxing training for a couple of months to make her performance more realistic.

| First of all, do not try to compare this movie with Sex is Zero. Watch this with an open mind. Here you will find a kind hearted gangster, a persistent boxer who tried to gain what her father had lost, the day to day lives of poor people in Seoul and a little boy who learns to fly. Watchable. Recommended to rent instead of buying. |

I love the pairing. This is tug and a love story with a slight drama and comedy at the same time. The tandem is the lead stars is something nice. They are together before in the movie "Wet Dreams 2". The story is something new for me and i like the ending. Pretty neat. Nice buy. |

| At first, i didn't know what to expect from this movie based on the trailer as it seemed like a comedy. However, I thought the movie was very enjoyable. It has romance, comedy, sadness, and some boxing. The plot is nothing unique, but it was entertaining, especially the two young kids. I would recommend this movie. |

A bit more serious than SIZ
|
Although featuring Chang Jung Lim and Ji Won Ha and directed by Yun Je Gyun who were all involved in the movie "Sex is Zero", the main initial thing to mention here is that although SIZ [or should that be sizzle? ;) ] was a very humorous and irreverent sex comedy, this is so contrasting and a far more serious drama. It does have humorous moments, but the humor becomes blunted due to the circumstances of home evictions and poverty. For instance the local mischievous kid's who modify an outside toilet, that Chang Jung's character often has to use, brings a few mirth filled moments, but tearful children and hardships are the norm here. The residents of this film are on the outskirts of social norms and live rugged existences only to have to be thrown out of their homes by local 'business associates' who want all of the locals bottoms out of town, so as to build high rise blocks in their place. In fact there's a lot more pathos here than anything. I was quite surprised with "Miracle" in a way as I thought that Ji Won Ha's character, being a trained boxer, was going to portray a sort of local heroine and smack the pants off all the nasty thugs that are trying to evict the poor residents with a topical 'girl power' fighting finale to top it all off. You almost anticipate it. But this film isn't quite like that and although Ji Won whomps a few gangsters mid way through, her main ambition is to fight at an Asian Boxing Championship and vindicate her defeated and sadly vegetable stated boxing father and full fill her own dream of becoming a boxing champ (all revealed in the movies intro). Chang Jung as the gangster who needs signed agreements from all the locals, to get the land deeds for the high rise blocks built for his bosses, acts well as the wide boy gangster and also shows a soft heart later in as he eventually gels with two mischievous but decent local children. He eventually realizes that there is more to life than putting money objectives over the lives of innocent people. In many ways, Chang's gangster / kids camaraderie and involvement is more featured than Ji Won's boxer character in the scheme of things with the residents. In this sense the film is a tease and the ending a bit off kilter and overly sentimental - for me, anyway. So don't expect Ji Won to come all over 'sting like a butterfly, fly like a bee' and save the local yokels by kick boxing the gangsters into the dust and out of town. She does box, but not with them! A love romance, though, with a male coffee vending machine attendant and another girl who is also one of the to be evicted residents (soorrry - I cannot find you actors names here as I type) is well played out and these two characters form a good sub plot which is quite endearing and finishes off way better than the overall film's final message. It is all a reasonable feel good film, though, about fulfilling dreams even if the ending isn't what might be expected with Ji Won's anticipated heroics (not that it has to be that way). The acting is top of the class as to be expected. Ji Won is great and with her adoptive boxing skills she must have worked hard to preform as she does and these elements of her role are played well, but I hope to see her in something more character central next time. "Miracle on 1st Street" is one of those movies where I'm not sure, by a single viewing, how to totally rate it - its all worth seeing, but don't expect great things from it. Ji Won though, I've read is to appear with Cha Tae Hyun in a romantic drama called "Babo" made by director Jeong Gwan Kim who also made "Ditto" and that is one I'm interested in seeing. One last thing - with Ji Won's boxing talent, I think she should box the ears of those who left the English subtitles off her last TV series "Hwang Jin Yi" and gave it erratic region codes. Honestly! |
